Heritage buildings: You'll see the scars of WWII throughout the cities of the East Midlands, but when you venture into the countryside you'll find astounding historic buildings. One shining example is Newstead Abbey, the seat of Lord Byron. The Elizabethan Hardwick Hall is even more impressive: Potterheads might recognise it as Malfoy Manor.

Loud music and Fast Cars: Depending on when you visit the East Midlands, a short trip to Donington Park might be in order. Since 2003 the park has hosted Download. The music festival usually takes place in mid-June and is a must for fans of heavy rock, metal and punk music. Donington Park is also home to the Donington Grand Prix, a must for fans of racing.

Natural attractions: Fans of natural scenery will find plenty to occupy themselves in the East Midlands. The Peak District National Park has a section in Derbyshire. Its rounded limestone hills are perfect for a day of hiking. The marshy Fens also have a section in the East Midlands, reaching into Lincolnshire.

Where to stay

Leicester: The largest city in the East Midlands is also one of the oldest in Britain. Lots of the medieval architecture has been preserved. Leicester is easy to explore on foot. On rainy days you can pop into one of the numerous museums, including one dedicated to Richard the Third (aka the King in the car park).

Nottingham: The 'Queen of the Midlands' is famous as the home of Robin Hood. With its charming market square, buzzing bohemian bars, and bizarre network of man-made caves, it's an excellent place to base yourself in during a trip to the East Midlands.

Derby: Discover industrial revolution history or just enjoy hanging out in the trendy riverfront area of Britain's most central city.
