Secluded beaches, migrating whales, and an atmosphere that's more European than Caribbean make the region a popular destination for in-the-know travellers. The city of Santa Bárbara de Samaná is the perfect base, with Los Haitises national park nearby, a plethora of buzzing bars and plenty of gorgeous coastline to explore.

Tui fly direct from London-Gatwick. Airlines serving the airport from locations outside the UK include Air Canada, Air Canada Rouge, Air Transat, JetBlue Airways, Neos Air, Servicios Aéreos Profesionales, WestJet, White Airways and XL Airways France.
Getting to your destination
Public transport is almost non-existent from the airport. Many hotels in Samana offer airport shuttle services: it's best to check with them before you fly. If your chosen accommodation is unable to offer this service you can book your airport transfer through one of the region's many shuttle companies. We recommend avoiding the touts on arrival and sorting this out before you fly. Another option is to hire a car at Samana Airport. You can compare prices with Skyscanner to find the best prices.
When to visit Samaná
The temperature in Samana is warm all year round. It's best to visit during winter as the Atlantic hurricane season lasts from June to November. August and September can have the worst weather, but this doesn't stop tourists from descending upon the peninsula. January to March is the best time for whale watching.
What to see and do
The beach: Península de Samaná has a fantastic selection of beaches to visit. Playa Bonita, Cayo Levantado, Playa El Portillo, La Playita, Playa Rincon, Playa Moron and Playa Las Ballenas are seven of the best. If you're on holiday for a week you could visit a new one every day.
Visit a National Park: Los Haitises National Park features beautiful limestone islands. Wander into ancient caves, spot some wildlife, and go swimming in a waterfall. There are plenty of companies all offering unique tours of the park, so no need to book ahead.
Get sporty: Scuba diving is a fantastic way to while away an afternoon in Samana, with plenty of undersea treasures to discover. There are a number of diving and sailing schools in the area. If you really want to get your adrenaline pumping, head into the jungle for a spot of zip-lining. Again, there are a few companies offering these excursions.
