Airports in Salvador
Deputado Luís Eduardo Magalhães International Airport (SSA) is the airport serving Salvador. It’s one of the busiest airports in Brazil. The airport has a shopping mall with plenty of opportunities to pick up some last minute gifts, as well as a good selection of restaurants in the arrivals and departure halls.
It’s worth knowing that the airport used to be called Dois de Julho International Airport, in commemoration of Bahia Independence Day, and it’s still known by this name locally.

Getting into Salvador
Deputado Luís Eduardo Magalhães International Airport is 28km away from the city centre.
Executive taxis (coometas and comtas) can be found outside the airport 24 hours a day. You pay for these taxis up front, and they have a tariff list so you can quickly see how much it will cost to reach your hotel. There are also normal taxis, which are metered: it’s worth asking the driver for an estimated price before setting off.
There’s an air conditioned minibus which leaves the airport every 20 minutes, costs R$4, and drops passengers at the Praca da Se in the Pelourinho district of the city centre. It also stops at the major tourist beaches: Ondina, Pituba, Amaralina, Itapua, and Barra.
Don’t fall asleep on the bus: the road from the airport is considered to be one of the most scenic attractions of Salvador due to its location among sand dunes and mile long bamboo grove.
Local buses to Lapa, Campo Grande, and Sao Joaquim also run from the airport regularly and stop in most of the main tourist districts. These are slightly cheaper at R$2.50, but if you don’t know your way around the city you should speak to the driver and ask him to let you know once you arrive in the district you want.
