While there are no direct flights to Pyongyang International Airport (FNJ) from the U.K., travellers can fly to Beijing in China and board Air Koryo. From Beijing, the two-hour flight will land directly in the Sunan District just north of the city's centre.

Since you can't get direct flights to Pyongyang from the U.K., you'll most likely be making a stop at Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK). British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, Air China, Lufthansa and Aeroflot all fly into the airport in Beijing.

Pyongyang International Airport is 15 miles north of Pyongyang's centre. There are two passenger terminals, with terminal 2 handling international travel. Passengers can move easily between terminals on foot. Taxi service is available at the airport, and the ride will last around 30 minutes to the city centre.

What's the Weather Like?

Pyongyang enjoys four distinct seasons throughout the year. Summer temperatures range in the 20s or even 30s, and there is plenty of sunshine. In autumn and spring, day temperatures drop to the single digits, and during the crisp nights, they fall below zero. Winters have an average daily temperature of -5 degrees, with nights falling to -10. Visitors can expect snow during the winter months. Ice skating is a favourite activity among locals.

City Guide: What to See and Do

The pretty Taedong River winds its way through Pyongyang, with attractions lining the banks on either side of the river. Many of the sites of interest commemorate political figures, victorious battles or the Juche philosophy. The grand Juche Tower offers rides to the top where visitors can take pictures of the city below. The Tomb of King Tongmyŏng and nearby pagoda-style Buddhist temple date to the fifth century. There are also extensive grounds with statuary to explore. The Monument to Party Founding, which is an iconic stone plaza, features statues of a hammer, sickle and calligraphy brush.
