While neighboring Ixtapa is filled with high-rise hotels and fancy golf courses, Zihuatanejo's charms lie in its relative peacefulness. A development code restricts buildings to four stories or less, and the row of palm frond-thatched palapas on the beach practically beg for a beach read and mid-afternoon shaded nap (try flagging down a local ... masseuse; they ply the beaches). Try snorkeling near Playa las Gatas, an artificial lagoon created by an emperor in pre-Columbian days. Stay on dry ground in Zihua (the local name) for excellent boutique shopping or traditional dining.

the year’s highest humidity and temperatures, does have some perks: the predictability of the rain (it usually only comes in the afternoons so you can get your beachtime and sightseeing done in the morning), cheaper hotel prices, fewer crowds, and a chance to see nature come to life with the nourishing water. You can also try to plan a trip during the months before and after high season -- November and May -- to try and snag good deals without as much wet weather.

Beautiful Zihuatanejo has gorgeous beaches and feels more authentically Mexican than Ixtapa, its neighbor to the north.

No wonder this is where Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman decide to hang out after they break out of prison. Paradise on earth.

Small very beautiful city/village with great beaches. I went there before the touristseason so everything was very calm. Seemed to be some clubs/discos at the bigger hotels as well. Rented an very big apartment on the beach with a terrace overlooking the ocean really cheap.

I have been to Zihuatanejo a couple of times. Each time, my family and I have stayed at a little B&B called Villa de la Roca. This place is very special. For one thing, it only has 5 rooms, so it feels like a house. If you get enough couples or families together to rent some of the rooms, you can have the whole place to yourselves. It's very peaceful and relaxing, and the staff is very friendly and accommodating. If you require breakfast in the morning, they will provide you with a bountiful buffet of fresh fruits, yogurt, honey, eggs, coffee, juice, and just about anything else that tickles your fancy. For dinner, they will serve up a gourmet meal of traditional Mexican cuisine.

The hotel is situated directly on the rocky cliffs (hence the name) overlooking the beautiful ocean. To the left of the hotel is the gorgeous Playa de la Ropa. The rooms are comfortable and private. There are three levels and at the top level of the hotel is where you have a small hot tub, the bar, the kitchen, the lounge, and the dining room. There's a roof of course but the walls are all completely open to the elements. The hot tub cascades down into a beautiful swimming pool. And there is a little thatch-roof hut that you can walk down to (through a spiral staircase encased in a tiny tower) and hang out in the hammock watching the waves splash around you.

As I said, the Playa is only a few steps from the hotel, and although it is a bit on the touristy side because of all the hotels behind it, it's still fun. There are lots of locals selling their handmade wares and an assortment of fun activities, like banana boating, parasailing, etc. There are also plenty of bars to choose from, where you can drink a margarita and sink your feet into the sand while watching the sunset.

You can also walk to the main part of town in about half an hour or so, and there are lots of adorable shops and restaurants down there. It's a very lively, fun little city.

I highly recommend visiting Zihuat and staying at the Villa de la Roca!
