If you visit Zanzibar and don't go on a Spice Tour, I honestly think you have done yourself a disservice. You will learn so much on these tours, get to see some of the countryside, visit local farms and see how many on Zanzibar make their living. Half and full days tours are available and be sure you come hungry because at the end of the tour you'll get to try tons of fruit and buy some spices from the farm to take home.

I absolutely loved it. You get to know about spices, maybe for some of you seeing the first time a vanilla plant or a black pepper plant! Did you know how the cardamon plant looks like?Or maybe the clove flower? Don't miss out!

This is such an interesting tour - I highly recommend it. I had no idea what pepper looks like before it's sitting in my spice cabinet or how vanilla grows until I went to the spice plantations. In addition to learning a great deal about things we use every day, you get to taste spices in their raw form, sip exotic tea, and sample some unusual fruit. Usually it is combined with the Stone Town city tour which is wonderfully informative and a great introduction to this hard-to-navigate city.

Nice place to spend the day, you get to taste the island spices and learn some interesting facts on Zanzibar (like the fact that Zanzibar is one of the biggest exporter of cloves). In most cases the guide will try to sell you some stuff like tea or spices. The tour usually takes about 2 hours more or less.

Local from Zanzibar

In days past, Zanzibar was known as a spice Island, exporting cloves, vanilla, nutmeg and cardamon across the World..Now days the plantations are a tribute to the Island's past, swapping spices for tourism, combining both in a spice tour, one of the most popular excursions on the Island...Walk through the spice farm with your guide, touch, smell and taste different spices and tropica fruits. Try to guess which is which, from the crushed leaves, the fruit, shoots and vines and creepers crawling up the trees. Learn about their properties, their origins and their use as medicines and in food and drink.
A visit to a spice farm village gives you an insight into local life and the opportunity to try some Swahili dishes, taste the fruits in a season and try some spiced tea. An optional lunch is available at Hakuna Matata Beach Lodge, a special menu, prepared with the best of the seasonal fruit and spices introduced to you during the tour.
