Description
Although nothing remains of the slave market today, other than some holding cells and chains, the site remains a sobering reminder of past.

I always think it's valuable to learn about a country's past - especially if it's dark. Zanzibar's is steeped with an ugly history of the slave trade where large numbers were brought over from the mainland to the island before being shipped off elsewhere. I recommend booking a tour and learning about the key buildings that played a part in the Zanzibar's slave trade. It may be haunting, but it is eye-opening at the same time.

Understanding the history of the slave trade is important, but this site in itself is not big or terribly fascinating.

Nothing too much to see here at all. It is really just two small holding chambers underground where slaves were held before they went to market.

schiavi in Africa orientale.
