The external facade has some charm but this former museum and home to Zanzibar's first elevator is closed until further notice due to structural problems that make it unsafe.

For good primer course in all things Swahili history and culture, the House of Wonders is the place to go. The building is the one of the largest and is the tallest on the island and is placed prominently near Forodhani Gardens and the main beachfront. It was originally built as a ceremonial hall and had the first elevator in East Africa.

It dominates the Stone Town waterfront, along with the fort. The inside is less impressive. It has an interesting history, though and a guide will probably take you here on a city tour and tell you all about it.

One of the many historical buildings in Stone Town, a must see during the visit of the Zanzibar capital.

Do not waste your time on this place. Zanzibar is a place for leisure, not for culture. Beside looking at the building from the outside there is not much to see besides the nice view you can see from the second floor.

The House Of Wonders, the most imposing structure on the sea front, was built in the 1880s as a celemonial palace, During the colonial period it was used as the headqaurters of the colonial administration. It was converted into a school and a Museum for the ruling party after the Revolution, designed by the North Koreans in their typical ''Great Leader'' tradition.
In the House of Wonders Museum of History and Culture of Zanzibar and the Swahili Coast, the approach is deliberately historical, and it is intended to cover not only Zanzibar but also the whole Swahili Coast from the Southern Somalia to northern Mozambique, because that is the cultural region.
