photogenic market. Though it is often included in a city tour, it is an easy (and free!) place to explore on your own.

A visit to this atmospheric market in the center of Stone Town is a must. Great people watching. The fish market is definitely fragrant but so are the spice stalls.

Few things help you get an inside look into a new city like a stroll around a local market. Darajani is in the heart of Stone Town and is always bustling with activity. It's a blast to the senses and is the perfect place to grab some mangos, bananas, spices or local handcrafts. While it can feel a bit chaotic and claustrophobic at times, it's well organized by type of product and is a fantastic way to delve deeper into life in Zanzibar.

This is a really fun place to explore. Definitely bring a camera (just make sure to ask before you snap any portraits). Also, a GREAT place to buy spices and teas. You'll pay at least double at the gift shops or plantations.

This is where the pulsating life of the city takes place and you are easily lost in the fray. Especially at the weekend it gets very crowded. Generally you get a very good insight into the everyday life of the locals and can even try to haggle. Of meat or fish, I would advise against, as they are not cooled and not necessarily fresh. The smell in the halls is anything but pleasant!

Located near the slave market, this bazaar frequented mainly by locals is a riot of noise, scents and colors.
At Darajani Market you can find everything from frying pans to traditional kangas, to raw meats and local products from all over the island.
