The capital and main harbour is called Zakynthos Town, or Zante, and has a population of about 10,000 inhabitants. The town used to have a particular architecture influenced by the Venetians, the French and the English who colonised the island. But the strong earthquake of 1953 destroyed the major part of the elegant mansions and fine neoclassical ... Read more
buildings that used to embellish the capital. Today only a few traditional buildings and churches are still standing. The new town was built on the ruins of the ancient one in an attempt to preserve the traditional architecture but this was only possible in a few areas, like the spacious Solomos Square. The long waterfront extending between the Solomos Square (on its right) and the Church of Agios Dionysios, saint patron of the island (on its left) is the most popular and crowded place of Zakynthos, gathering many restaurants, tourist shops and ferry agencies. All the commercial and cultural life of the island is concentrated on the third parallel street of the waterfront.

Great place for a holiday has something for everyone; nightlife, quiet spots, history, scenery, walking etc. Good variety of places to eat at with various price ranges. Friendly people.

Few years ago I was here with my family for vacation. It was lovely, places to see is definitely Navagio Beach with the pirate ship and if you come at right time, you can even see turtles on the other side of island. We were there in mid-september and the weather was changing quickly,so I recommend to go here only during July,August ;)

The capital of Zakynthos, Zákynthos, is inhabited by more than half of the population living on the island. The town is small but has all the amenities: in summer it is crowded and nightlife is considered among the best in Greece, to the point that has been renamed "the little Vegas", especially in the areas of Laganos and Argassi. The capital is famous for being the birthplace of Ugo Foscolo, who dedicated to the island the sonnet "A Zacinto", the birthplace of Foscolo was destroyed and in its place was placed a statue.
