Honestly-I think they would do better if they would make it as real working spa. For 15000 rp u will see old Portuguese-built spa, tunnels under (very hard to find so take ur time) and a lot of shops with art, souvenirs etc.

It's a bit out of the way and very underwhelming after Borobudur. Worth a visit if you're in the area for more than a day.

Also known by the Dutch name waterkasteel (water castle), the Taman Sari Water Castle is a collection of rooms and pools that were once part of the sultans pleasure palace. You can climb up to a view point above the pools where tour guides like to tell you that this is where the Sultan would choose which woman he would be with next. Not sure if that is true or not. Cheap entry, about $1 US.

Taman Sari is an elaborate ‘bathroom’. It was once the place where the sultan had his baths with his queen, children, and concubines of choice. Interesting rooms are the 'keris' washing room, the iconic round mosque, and a meditation room where the sultan communicates with the metaphysical beings. It’s recommended to take a guide with you as they know all the weird oddities of the sultan’s chambers and habits, something you won’t get in guidebooks. Also, there’s a shadow puppet and batik maker working their skill off. Entrance fee are IDR 7,000 / person (international visitors), camera fare and guide tip excluded.

Taman Sari also known as Taman Sari Water Castle is a site of a former royal garden of the Sultanate of Yogyakarta. It is located about 2 km south within the grounds of the Kraton, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Built in mid 18th century, the Taman Sari had multiple functions, such as a resting area, a workshop, a meditation area, a defense area, and a hiding place.[2]
Taman Sari consisted of four distinct areas: a large artificial lake with islands and pavilions located in the west, a bathing complex in the centre, a complex of pavilions and pools in the south, and a smaller lake in the east. Today only the central bathing complex is well preserved, while the other areas have been largely occupied by the Kampung Taman settlement. (wikipedia)

Formerly, Tamansari was a garden for recreation and resting house for Sultan and family. Tamansari in Yogyakarta was also used for meditation and place ffor hiding for royal family from enemy assault. This tourist object was built by Sultan Hamengkubuwono I in the end of XVII Century. Tamansari in Yogyakarta is located about 2km from Yogyakarta Palace. The aesthetic side of Tamansari can be seen from its building. Shapes and ornaments of Tamannsari in Yogyakarta is very unique. All ornamments used in Tamansari simbolize Javanesse culture. That makes Tamansari in Yogyakarta is very distinctive to other tourist objects.
