the Great Dagon Pagoda or the Golden Pagoda. This breathtaking pagoda houses several ancient relics and is considered the most sacred of all Burmese Buddhist shrines. It is located west of Kandawgyi Lake, on Singuttara Hill. At 325 feet high, this golden-plated pagoda completely dominates the city skyline. Many tourists choose to buy pieces of gold leaf from the vendors and apply it to the Pagoda as a token of respect for the beauty of this amazing gilded landmark.

The Shwedagon Pagoda also known in English as the Golden Pagoda, is a 99 metres (325 ft) gilded pagoda and stupa located in Yangon, Burma. According to tradition, the Shwedagon Pagoda has existed for more than 2,500 years, making it the oldest historical pagoda in Burma and the world.
In my book, it should be in top 10 of the world's greatest wonders!

It’s my first stop every time I visit Yangon!

Shwedegon, the must-go landmark in Yangon. It’s golden pagoda will shimmer high and bright at night that form the skyline - it can be seen at many places in Yangon. Avoid going at noon as the heat will really piss you off. Follow the local custom and start paying respect to the hundreds of Buddha in it.

Shwedagon Pagoda plays many roles in Burma. It is an icon, an important religious site, and one of the city’s most popular attractions. Personally, it is the biggest pagoda I have ever seen. Its golden spire pierces the sky and towers high above the city. This is a sacred area for Buddhist monks, so there’s a good chance you’ll get a glimpse of some of their rituals when visiting. Shwedagon Pagoda is a top sight to see in Yangon.

The premiere draw to Yangon and actually, for most, all of Burma is this shining golden-topped temple complex that is the country's most important spiritual center. It's been adorned with gold leaf and jewels, stands tall to the sky, and even has relics from the Buddha. It's about $10 USD to get in for foreigners. A must-see!

Absolutely gorgeous pagoda in Myanmar. This is probably the best temples I've seen in all of south east Asia - it truly remains an extremely sacred and special place for the locals. It is absolutely breathtaking and massive. You'll have to walk barefoot (no socks!) throughout and cover up as you do in most pagodas and if it's hot (which it will be), your feet will have a run for their money but it is still an absolute must see in Yangon and Myanmar.

This Buddhist temple is huge and very clean since you need to take off your shoes. This is a must see not just for the multitude of shrines and buddhas but watching the locals. Take your time and immerse yourself.

It is so cool at night and dawn. That pagoda is solid structure with no interior space. build of brick. It was seated by King Okkalapa 2600 year ago.

Ultimately, one of my favourite places in all of Yangon. One of the most sacred pagodas in Myanmar, this Buddhist shrine is crowded from morning til late evening. Come just before dusk to experiene the golden pagoda in all its glory.

Everybody will be sure to tell you that in Yangon if there's one thing you absolutely cannot miss, it's the Shwedagon Pagoda. Indeed it's one of the most famous and oldest pagodas in the world, dating back some 2,500 years. Gold-plated and encrusted with 4531 diamonds, the pagoda can be literally blinding by day, but by dusk the place undergoes a dramatic transformation, and incidentally the best time to visit is just before sundown. Even with the crowds of tourists, you can feel a kind of timeless, spiritual peace.

The Shwedagon Pagoda or "golden" pagoda is the nicest pagoda you will see in South East Asia. Breathtaking, picturesque, soulful, the Shwedagon Pagoda is all these things and more. You'll find yourself visiting it multiple times during your stay in the Myanmar capital city of Yangon. During your visit, make sure you see it at night as the pagoda is open till 10 PM and the gold beautifully glimmers at dusk. A must see attraction for any traveler.

The mother of all Burmese temples, this stunning collection of golden pagodas north of the city center is what makes the otherwise miss-able city of Yangon a must. A genuine religious site, and not just a tourist temple, it's at its most beautiful in the changing light of dawn or dusk, when hundreds and sometimes thousands of worshippers come to pay respect. Bring a camera.

For me the pagoda was most impressive from afar atop its hill on the edge of the city. The night views are amazing.

The actual visit to the base was less impressive than I had hoped it would be. If you do go try to hit the early morning or late evening.

Beautiful and very Peaceful. The weather is pretty hot and the temple floor is covered with marbles, so if you go bare foot, it could be pretty painful. There are sayings that if you walk around the pagoda three times, it brings you good fortune :)

Unlike many temples which feel like museums, Shwedagon is teeming with humanity. It is a wonderful place to observe and interact with the Burmese people. Although the temple is best known for its scale, its biggest attraction is seeing it in use.

Visit multiple times during different times of day. The glow of the temple changes with the sunlight as do the people and rituals on display. Be sure to visit during sunset. The cooler evening hours are more comfortable and make for excellent photography.
