Where to stay in Westport

Whether you want a peaceful night's sleep in the Buller countryside, or to party the night away with Westport locals, choosing the right location is just as important as choosing the perfect hotel. We've put together a quick guide to some of Westport's most popular areas. Use our map search to find hotels in the parts of Westport that suit your travel style.

Central Westport

Westport is the main town for the Buller region, and is the perfect base for exploring the coastline and indulging in adventure sport activities. Budget travellers can rest their head (and learn a new skill) at Bazil's Backpackers BBH Hostel and Surf School. Nightlife in Westport is low-key, but there are a few places to head after dark. Take in a show at the NBS Theatre, or grab a bite at the PortSide Bistro and Bar. Westport also has a small but nice selection of teahouses and art galleries that older travellers will enjoy. Accommodation options in Westport include the Buller Bridge Motel, and The Westport Hotel.

With the Tasman Sea on one side and towering mountains on the other, the small town of Granity makes a great base for nature lovers. The town centre is packed with cute cottages, one of which houses the Torea Art Gallery and Studios. There's also one café and one restaurant, and a museum showcasing local history.

The biggest draw is the coastline, which is home to Hector dolphins: an endangered species. Granity has some quirky accommodation options. The most creatively named is the six-bedroom Ghost Lodge, but you'll also find quaint guesthouses such as Miners On Sea and Charming Creek Bed & Breakfast.

Cape Foulwind

If you're looking for a tranquil escape, look for accommodation near Cape Foulwind. This remote corner of Westport is home to a lighthouse, a seal colony, and not much else (apart from the Omau Settlers Lodge Motel). One of the top attractions is the Cape Foulwind Walkway, which passes farmland and cliffs to reach the seal colony at Tauranga Bay.

You'll need to hire a car at Westport Airport to get the most out of your break, as you'll be quite a distance from shops and restaurants. Fun fact: this headland was previously known as Rocky Cape, but was renamed by James Cook when a gust blew his boat out to sea as he tried to sail past.

Once a goldrush town, Charleston is now facing a different type of rush: adventure and eco-tourists. The town is especially famous for its limestone cave networks, and guided tours of the Te Ananui (Metro) Cave draws hundreds of adrenaline addicts each year. The nearby Nile River is a great spot for rafting and the bush tram track is another of the town's must-sees.

If you want to base yourself in Charleston, your accommodation options include Charleston Holiday Park and Charleston Lodge. The town is also perfect for visiting the Paparoa National Park to the south, and isn't too far from Cape Foulwind (which is just to the north).

Carter's Beach

If you're looking for hotels in Westport Airport, Carter's Beach is ideal. The small town is also a perfect choice for beach lovers and families, as it boasts a sheltered sandy beach. This is one of the only places on the west coast where it's safe to swim. Local restaurants like Donaldo's serve up simple fare that's perfect for young (and fussy travellers).

The 18-hole Westport Golf Club is also in Carter's Beach, making hotels such as Carters by the Sea, Carters Beach Top 10 Holiday Park, and Carter's Beach Bed & Breakfast ideal for golfers.
