Description
When it came to constructing the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in 1982, the sensitive subject caused great controversy. The design of the monument, consisting of long, black granite slabs etched with the ... Read more
58,272 names of fallen Vietnam War soldiers, was frowned upon by prominent figures like Ross Perot and James Webb. However, these issues seem long forgotten by the three million annual visitors of the monument today. The reflective properties of the stone, imported from India, is a representation of the past and present as one. As viewers read the names of the fallen soldiers, they see themselves as well.

Another attraction that's great to see when the sun's going down or at night. Not a ton of people around and the way the light paints the sky to bounce off of the memorial is beautiful

The wall of names is quite moving. This is my favorite memorial. There was a long line of visitors and it didn’t prevent our being able to see the wall. We saw people honoring soldiers with flowers and tears. I think everyone should visit this memorial
.

This is a amazing experience. We looked up a fallen family member in the book provided on each side of the wall. Found him easily. You must pay your respects. You won't regret it!

Haunting and a bit uncomfortable, but you can't really miss it if you're there. Evocative of the tragedy and futility of the conflict. But I always feel like I am intruding on others' grief.

Found one of my grandfather's best friends on the wall and sent him a picture of his name. He started crying and thanked us for finding him. I couldn't believe how many names were written on this wall.

Honoring My father that experienced this and watched his friends die in front him. He Never talked about it. The agent orange possibly killed him too. His name will be at the new memorial. He passed from cancer in 2009.

Seeing all these names, I realize how fortunate my Dad was to make it out alive. At night when you look between the slabs of granite, it appears backlit. Very cool design. Very honorable wall for our ViêtNam vets who made the ultimate sacrifice!

Being Vietnamese, this memorial means a lot to me. This was a war where I had family fight for the South side of Vietnam. I made sure to check this out and pay my respects.

Very sombering memorial and seeing all the names laid out on the black walls puts a little perspective on just how many lives were lost.
