Classy, hole in the wall bar that's smaller than most kitchens but brimming with class and a century's worth of history. Grab a drink and then walk around the hotel lobby, which has hosted every POTUS since Pierce. It's like having a cocktail in a museum and a must for any visit to DC. The mint julip is the main attraction, rumored to have been invented here, but they shake a fine martini too.

The Round Robin Bar, located in the elegant Willard Hotel, has been open for over a century and has hosted almost every US president since Zachary Taylor. Rumor has it that the mint julep was invented here.

Part of the elegant Willard Intercontinental Hotel, the Round Robin Scotch Bar has been slinging drinks since 1850 – and has been one of the places in DC patrons are most likely to rub elbows with the rich and powerful for just as long (it is also easy to pick out the locals from the more casually-dressed hotel guests sitting at the historic bar). Think top shelf drinks – the bar is known for its selection of classic cocktails (like the DC themed ‘cherry blossom’ which includes Jim Beam, Cointreau, and sparkling wine) and as the birthplace of the modern mint julep (as per a bourbon based recipe provided by Henry Clay). The bar menu also serves high-end appetizers and small bites (with menu items like shrimp cocktail and crab cake sliders). The $20 cheese plate is a good deal for two – it comes with plenty of bread, jam, and fruit in addition to nice cheese selection.

The Round Robin Bar has been drawing together politicians and DC elite since 1850. Many argue that much of the decisions made in DC during the Civil War, happened in this bar over various whiskey drinks. The most infamous of these drinks being the Mint Julep. The origin of the Mint Julep is widely disputed though believed to have been created by U.S. Senator Henry Clay of Kentucky while visiting the Round Robin Bar. The bar is lined with paintings of US presidents who visited the establishment, though writers such as Mark Twain and Walt Whitman are known to have frequented the bar as well. The cocktails run at the pricier end, around $15 each, though the thrill of sharing a drink with the remembered presence of historical figures is priceless.
