Museum is wonderful, and we are a big fan of the monthly Phillips After Five.

The Phillips Collection is a small museum with a great collection of art (Renoir, Rothko, Picasso, O'Keeffe, and Matisse for example). On the first Thursday of every month, the museum hosts Phillips After 5. The event includes live music, food trucks, themed-cocktails -- pretty much everything you need for a fun evening.

A wonderful, intimate museum of modern art, with the current Exhibition, 'Made in the USA' fantastic and getting rave reviews. The difference between American and European Impressionism (the US uses more silver and more realism for instance), quotes from artists about realism and abstraction like Calder's 'I make what I see. It's only the problem of seeing it.' and generally a focus on education as well as display permeates the exhibit. Informative but lighthearted. Located a few blocks from the DuPont Circle metro stop, USA's first modern art museum was established by heirs of Pittsburg steel money and opened to the public in 1921. Much of the art was purchased while the artists were alive, some pieces were their first museum sales making this Collection important historically as well. Georgia O'Keefe, Edward Hopper, Max Weber and over 100 other American artists are showcased. Three stories and two buildings, but not too large to overwhelm you with art, not too small to feel like your entry fee wasn't worth it. The European part of the collection is in a second building, and includes the Renoir masterpiece, Luncheon of the Boating Party as well as works by Degas, Cezanne and many others. 1 hour minimum to skim through the highlights but if you really like modern art, plan on 2 hours at least.

In a city filled with more free top-class museums than I can count on my fingers and toes the Phillips Collection is my choice for the top not free museum in Washington, DC. The collection is extensive and varied. And the fact that it isn't free keeps the number of visitors to a minimum. This gives you lots of time and space to wander the museum at your leisure, spend an extra few minutes in the Rothko room or soak up the smells in the beeswax room. Really a fantastic museum to visit for a few hours on a bright afternoon.

Modern art gallery founded in Duncan Phillips Dupont Circle Area mansion. The collection is an eclectice mix of pieces of modern art from a variety of artists and movements. I am not a huge modern art fan myself, but still enjoyed the museum. The building is very pretty as well. I wouldn't put it on the top of my list considering some of the other larger (and free) Smithsonian museums. However, if you have already checked out the Smithsonian art galleries and are a fan of Modern Art, I would recommend the Phillips Collection.

Forget the Smithsonian. The Phillips houses one of the country's largest modern art collections - including works from Klee, Paul Cézanne, Edgar Degas, Winslow Homer, Henri Matisse, Georgia O'Keeffe, Pablo Picasso, Mark Rothko, and Vincent van Gogh. And since the collection is in private hands, it will remain unfazed even during a government shutdown. Book tickets in advance.

Good collection! I'm not that much into the modern art, but they have some impressionist art too.
