This has to be the only hotel in DC where you can get a room with bunk beds, should you so choose (if you really feeling sentimental about the days you shared a bedroom with a sibling…or more than one). The hotel has an upbeat, colorful, whimsical vibe – and other perks include free loaner bikes and yoga mats in every room (just like all the other Kimpton-operated hotels in the city). If a bunk bed is not your thing, the Helix also offers 400-square-foot Flex Studio Rooms – basically, you have a personal gym included in your digs (with television) and naturally, a hula hoop too.

Walking into the lobby I felt immediately like I wanted a cocktail and to sit in the open courtyard and relax. The hotel rooms are smaller than a few of the other Kimpton properties, but they featured the best mini bar. The in-room refrigerator is based on the 1960s refrigerators and it added a fun component to the room. I’m not a fan of platform beds, but these were comfortable. The rooms reminded me of something in Vegas – fun. This isn’t a kid friendly hotel, but it’s great for the young adult traveler.

The Helix is not far from Massachusetts Avenue with all its foreign business, think tanks, and foundations. But, as a bellman said to me, "we like to concentrate on the fun stuff." Its patrons are more likely to be headed to the concert venues and clubs on the 14th Street and U Street corridors.

When I visited, some folks were on computers in the lobby area; others were taking in the sun on the nice urban patio. Business and play were mixing easily.

The decor is playful and colorful. There's a small fitness center, but no pool.

Been here twice. First time is when they originally opened...was the hot place for creatives to go at the time. Went again after Kimpton bought it. Was still good...just not as great as I remembered it. Although the neighborhood has vastly improved. Would stay again.

Where was this place when my kids were little?! A separate bedroom for the kids with bunk beds and their own TV? I totally would have snapped that up. But you can still do it! Kiss the kiddies goodnight, shut their door, pop the cork on a bottle of wine and watch A GROWNUP show. Rates are almost twice as much for this room, but you can get one with two queens for much less. Besides the expected suites, some unusual options include a room with workout equipment and some with kitchenettes.

As in all Kimpton hotels, Helix has a free wine hour in the bar, and while you’re sipping your chardonnay, they have a Wii set up for the kids!

You might not know from the outside that the Helix was in there – they’re adding some big chairs and pictures out front now – but that’s OK, it will be our little secret.

This boutique hotel is very hospitable and great for family travelers. They have eco-friendly practices and offer a kid-friendly dining experience as well as provide parents with a list of local activities the kids will be interested in upon arrival. With just a phone call, you can acquire kid’s snacks, babysitting services, and even some kid friendly action in the gym!

These Kimpton hotels are all about style, and Helix doesn't disappoint. I appreciated the tecno vibe when I walked in the door and really dug the electronic curtain they had up in place of a sliding glass door. Real nice touch.

Helix is as much a hangout as it is a hotel. The bar is ultra-cool and the rooms fall right in line. Hip art lines the walls in the lobby and guest rooms and some cool furnishings make the whole place feel like a party spot.

That's not to say there isn't a quiet place to be found. The gym is perfectly nice, the business center offers everything you need and the rooms make for a good hideaway. I also really appreciate the proximity to Logan Circle, which has some stellar bars and some good food.

Even though they were really busy when I was there, the staff was courteous and ultra helpful. There's really nothing I can take away from this hotel.

Love the hip sassy vibe of this boutique DC hotel. They knew I was coming in from California, surfer girl mural on the back wall of my bed! ;)
