Top Vientiane hotels by interest

Slow paced and relaxing, the capital of Laos is a breath of fresh air compared to other cities in South East Asia. Hotels in Vientiane make the perfect base for a few days of visiting temples, relaxing with a Beer Lao, and simply enjoying the gorgeous weather.

Most people pass through Vientiane before setting off to explore the rest of Laos, or to recover before flying home. If you’re planning a stopover in the city it’s well worth extending it to a few days so that you can enjoy everything it has to offer.

Vientiane is famous for its numerous temples and stupas. The most famous is Wat Si Sakat, the oldest temple in the city. Other temples worth visiting include the Black Stupa (home to a mythical seven headed dragon said to protect Vientiane) and Pha That Luang (a gilded stupa which is one of the most important religious monuments in the country).

Vientiane is a great place to unwind. There are some excellent yoga studios, massage parlours, and excellent spas. If you want to be a little more active you can enjoy bicycle tours through the city, go hiking in the nearby nature parks, or pay a visit to the nearby Zip-Lining Adventure Park.

There are plenty of dining options in Vientiane too, with lots of street food stalls serving noodle soups and plenty of multicultural sit-in restaurants. The French cuisine is particularly good here. You’ll find lots of relaxed restaurants along the river front, and the night market is a must-visit if you’re into street food.

While there are some great accommodation deals in Vientiane, the city isn’t renowned for its budget options. Instead Vientiane is known for its stylish boutique hotels and five star global brands, with very few hostels to choose from. There are some cheap guesthouses in the city, but they do fill up quickly.

You should always book early to get the best prices, especially during January: the most popular month to visit the city. Most of the hotels in Vientiane can be found around the touristic area: on the Mekong riverfront, around Nam Pho Square, and along Setthariat and Samsenthai streets.
