A beautiful, beautiful opera house that does classical and contemporary operas. I personally prefer the old style operas where the stage is transformed into some 17th Century palace and the performers dress in their period costumes. It's just so suitable to attend something like this when in Vienna!

Every building in Vienna is beautiful, but this is probably my favourite. They have guided tours most days at 10:00 and 11:00 or you can buy a ticket for a show!

Super grand HUGE opera house. The performance hall is breathtaking - you wouldn't believe the size! Cheap standing room (Stehplatz) tickets are sold 80 minutes before the performance commences. Get in line if you're thinking of scoring such a ticket at the Staatsoper - it's the grandest and most popular (best singers, best repertoire, etc) of all the opera houses in Vienna! Try to arrive even 3 hours earlier if you're big on opera and taking this seriously ;)

Opulent splendor! An amazing place. Bring suit and tie to fit in with the locals who know how to dress for the opera.

The Vienna State Opera is definitely a necessary stop on any trip to Vienna. This having been my first opera, it was amazing to see the interior of the Opera house and view a performance. Subtitles were available in German and English in front of each seat, with ticket prices varying from pretty cheap (ours were €32) to pretty expensive (they say they can go up to as much as €240). It was an amazing experience that you need to see when visiting Vienna!

Seeing a performance in this place leaves you speechless. The acoustics are amazing, the decor divine, and the shows are amazing. I came away feeling like I'd just had one of the best theater experiences of my life.

I had one night in Vienna, so I molded my stay around seeing performance at the Wiener Staatsoper. I was able to buy a ticket online. It was the premiere of a contemporary opera. The show was challenging (I actually held my ears for parts) but the Opera House is stupendous. Its an absolutely grand theater in the old style, full of balconies and gilding. It was a real pleasure to sit in the velvet chair, gaze over the other opera goers, and doze off every so often, since I was afflicted with jetlag.

Absolutely beautiful opera house. It is constantly in operation, with operas or concerts almost every day of the week. Unfortunately it can be difficult for tourists to find tickets as they often sell out far in advance. Nevertheless, you can often still get standing only tickets, which are worth it if only to walk around and explore the building.

We took a scheduled tour of this great institution. You get a real sense of the place even without going to a performance (next time). They were setting up for a opera and you could see how elaborate the stage was. Worth the time.

Vienna Opera House has history dating back to the mid-19th century. The building was the first major building on the Vienna Ringstraße. It is located in a center of Vienna, take your time to look around the building. It's stunning!

Book your ticket ahead of time. I was able to procure box tickets for L'Elisir d'Amour and this completely finished off an already divine experience.
