luxury goods, banks and insurance agencies appeared and the city's tax offices were located in the area. The city's abattoir was also in the Rialto. Most of the buildings in the Rialto were destroyed in a fire in 1514, the sole survivor being the church San Giacomo di Rialto, while the rest of the area was gradually rebuilt.

Lovely food on sale, but way too much touristy stuff. Dont go there during Venice's busy months.

Rialto is the heart of Venice. Every morning except on Sundays there's a colorful open air food market, with scenic views on the Grand Canal. The fish market opens five morning a week, Tuesdays through Saturdays. Don't forget to bring your camera! Hidden in the side alleyways there are some excellent wine and tapas bars and some delicious trattorias.

Markets around the Rialto Bridge in Venice. Narrow streets with sidewalk vendors.

The Rialto Fish Market and the fruit and vegetable market are open from 7.30am-1.00pm every day except Sunday. The fish market is not open on Monday. This amazing market has been operating every day for almost a thousand years and is the place to get the freshest of produce.

Rialto markets are absolutely fascinating. Vegaetables, fruit, fresh fish, absolutely a fantastic experience. Just around the market, very crowded, there are many places where to take a drink, spritz or prosecco are a must, or to have lunch or fingerfoods.

I'm a sucker for markets and the Rialto Market does not disappoint. Granted, at the time that we were there, there were more people taking pictures of the food than there were people shopping for fish (guilty as charged). Food looked delicious too. Only wish I had space and facilities to try some of what they offered.

This incredible market is a highlight of Venice. Everything is remarkably fresh and the market seems to go on forever!

Hemingway gives an extremely vivid description of the Rialto fish markets in "Across the River and into the Trees." He describes the color and texture of the various Adriatic fish brought here for sale. The Rialto Market is one of the few pieces of authentic Venetian culture left.

The Rialto fish market is an interesting site to see - especially early in the morning. It seems that almost every possible water-based creature can be found there.

It's best to arrive early if you want to see the Erberia (vegetable market) and Pescheria (fish market) in full swing. The barges start arriving at dawn, and the vendors are bargaining with customers by 08:00. The wholesalers and most of the retailers close up shop by midday, so stock up on fruit and photo opportunities before lunch!

When crossing the Rialto bridge, you will end up eventually on the commercial district. Mainly touristic and souvenirs shops, and you will definitely find something interesting to buy, specially a Venetian mask.

I love markets, so I go out of my way to find them in every city. This one did not disappoint. Cheap and plentiful produce, and super fresh. I made my lunch just with fresh fruit and it cost me nothing!

I am a big fan of local markets. In fact, whenever I visit a European city, the first thing I ask people is "Where is the local market?" The Rialto Markets is the Market in Venice. However, a lot of people don't know about it, and it is small compared to most of the markets I have been to. Hidden beside the Rialto Bridge, the markets hosts venders fresh seafood, fruits and vegetables. Most of the shoppers are locals and they come early to claim their fresh grocery. By lunch time, it is quite deserted, especially the fish market. The only action you see is some seagulls fighting for left over fish heads on the ground.

Best place in Venice to pick up fresh fruit and veg as well as fresh fish. Don't just come to take pictures, make sure to buy something for a picnic too. And don't be afraid to buy the fish...the fishmonger will fillet it for you if you ask. Happy shopping!

Fantastic outdoor market in Venice. I mean really, you've probably never seen a fish market as fabulous as the fish market in Venice.

You can find everything and more at the Rialto Market, from food, fresh fruit and vegetables, clothes, trinkets to take away as memories of Venice, maybe to give to someone. A wonderful succession of colors and voices, shouts and music, passers-by, Venetians, tourists, almost seems like a carousel of the city. Worth to be seen, maybe to buy a carnival mask to take home someone when you leave.
