di San Marco was constructed in the 11th century. Throughout the following centuries, wealthy Venetians donated gifts to expand and embellish the church, leading it to be nicknamed the Chiesa d'Oro (Church of gold). The most well known of the church's treasures is the Pal d'Oro e Tesoro or the Golden Altar Piece. The Golden Altarpiece was created in the Gothic style with 2,000 precious gems and 255 enameled panels. The Golden Altarpiece was most likely originally constructed in the 10th century and then embellished by master Venetian and Byzantine artisans between the 12th and 14th centuries.

The golden altar of San Marco is a must see for anyone visiting Venice. It's simply stunning. Be aware - they say no photography in the basilica... so keep your camera hidden and be stealthy.

When I visited Venice, I was living in Istanbul at the time so it was with a mixture of fascination and anger that I entered the treasury of San Marco. You see most of the loot in the treasury was carted off from Constantinople after the 4th Crusade, which did not so much liberate the Holy Land as plunder the wealthiest Christian city in the world at the time. The Pala D'Oro is gorgeous nonetheless. I was luck enough to see it displayed during Midnight Mass in 2008.
