A true multitasker, Vatican City is the seat of the Holy Roman Catholic Church, the home of the Pope, and the world's smallest independent state. Surrounded by the Italian capital Rome, the Vatican is also known locally for its postal service which far outstrips the Italian one for reliability and speed. Occupying about one half kilometer of Rome, The Vatican is further significant because of its fabulous architecture, religious, and artistic treasures. Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel ceiling is one of the world's most famous artistic treasures, commissioned by Pope Julius II della Rovere in the 16th century. And that's just one of the treasures in the Vatican Museum's collection, which hails from from around the world. Saint Peter's Basilica ... Read more
is a work of architectural note, its gilded interior filled with sculpture and ornamentation, among which Michelangelo's Pieta holds a place of honor.
Whizzing over cobblestones on a motorino and al fresco dining, two of Rome's most iconic activities, are best performed from September to November and April to July. Temperatures really start to soar into the 100s (40°C) over July and August, and in August many stores and restaurants close for le ferie (holidays). Don't be discouraged by the idea of a winter trip, however...though it's cold, you'll have the city to yourself and the Christmas holidays really light up the city.

One of the most beautiful collections of art and history on earth, the Vatican itself is beautiful and filled with some of the worlds most historical artifacts over hundreds and thousands of years. Be careful though, the summer tourist rush makes this place
Unbelievably crowded and you'll feel like cattle being herded on a ranch, better time to visit would likely be in spring or fall.

Of course you have to go to the Vatican. When in line for St. Paul's Cathedral watch out for people telling you there is a long line-they're trying to sell you some scam your. The line moves quickly so don't fret. The post office is on the right, go there to mail an extra special postcard with a Vatican City postmark!

It's hard to describe Vatican City- the smallest country in the world is a beautiful, sacred and holy place that's somehow been turned into Disneyland for Romans. The place is positively crawling with tourists by 9am, which dampens the experience a little bit - sacred sites should be enjoyed and soaked in, not bypassed with a quick photo - but it's still a surreal feeling to stand in the Sistine Chapel or St. Peter's Basilica. Purchase tickets online to skip the line, but still get there as early as possible.

A sparkling theatre of excess and strobes lights. Or something. Endlessly historical, but kind of overbearing in its religiosity. I guess it's to be expected. Something something 1.4 popes per square mile.

Vatican City is tiny—110 acres—but it houses the world's largest Catholic church (St. Peter's Basilica).

Great history and culture in the Vatican! The churches are beautiful and they sell a lot of things in the area that have been blessed in the Basilica
