Why Go

If you've got one of the highest per capita GDPs in the world and massive oil revenues, why not build a few of your own manmade luxury resort islands? The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is a conglomerate of seven distinct emirates, each led by their own emir (leader). You know it best by the two largest emirates, Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Both skirt the Persian Gulf, with some of the most spectacular coastline development the world has ever seen. The main cities are each an exemplar of forward-thinking city design and construction, with breathtaking hotels, skyscrapers, white sand beaches and world class shopping. Want an indoor ski slope, the world's tallest structure and a truly cosmopolitan vibe? Try Dubai. Want a quieter, more Arabian city still ... Read more
filled with luxury? Head to Abu Dhabi. Much of the coastline is rugged with some of the largest sand dunes in the world, so desert safaris are a favorite. While staying in UAE can be expensive, the quality of lodging, world-class dining (with nearly every cuisine one can imagine), and shopping to rival any European metropolis makes UAE an irresistible destination for anyone interested in experiencing what untold oil revenues can do in the Middle East.

Barely a month seems to go by without a story about some hapless tourist or ex-pat running afoul of the myriad laws of the UAE. No kissing in public, no flipping the bird in public, no being drunk in public, no drugs to even be in your system when you arrive – man, this place is harsh. You’re in a country where even Skype is illegal. I (literally) ran into trouble on the Dubai Metro – running for the train is a fineable offence. As is carrying bulky luggage (a bit daft when you consider it goes to the airport) and eating or drinking anything – even water. It doesn’t matter if the air-con is broken and it’s 50°C and your brain is melting. Burn baby burn.

I'd describe the UAE, particularly Dubai and Abu Dhabi, as "where the Middle East meets the West." It's a beautifully fused country of western ideals and influence with a semi-traditional Arab & Muslim culture. It combines high standard Islamic principles with glamor and style.

Since this is my now adopted country now, I can't say enough about it. There is more here than meets the eye or first impressions, make sure to ask lots of people what they suggest for you to do here...it can be tricky to find all the great things here to do. If you love shopping then you can shop till you drop! They to come in late fall or early spring for the best weather if you don't like heat.
