This is an incredible (and slightly more expensive) alternative to College Backpackers. Located in Kensington Market, this hostel is everything that College Backpackers is not... It's modern and it's clean. They organize a lot of events for backpackers and staff is always offering great advice on where to go in the city. The travellers here tend to be really friendly and open to meeting new people. The rooms are very clean and so are the shared bathroom. But I'd still wear flip flops to the shower.

Amazing, incredible and perfect. Couldn't have found a better place to stay. Planet Traveler offers a clean and modern hostel in the perfect location (right next to Kensington Market and close to Queens Street). The staff of the hostel is helpful and they strive for the hostel to be more than a bed. They plan three events each week with a movie night on Mondays, pub evening on Wednesdays and a free BBQ on the rooftop every Saturday. To top it off they also offer free breakfast every morning from 7 am to 1 pm. Possibly the best hostel I've ever stayed at.

Really liked staying in this hostel! The staff was really nice and helpful and the building itself was clean and modern, which is a complete departure from the stereotypical hostel. The hostel has a rooftop area which is pretty cool unfortunately I went in February so it was closed off due to the cold. However, you can see the CN Tower from the roof. The hostel is close to the light rail/bus line which will take you into the heart of downtown within 10 mins. The only downside was that I had to pay for parking and the lot was really small and not secured. Otherwise, if you're traveling on a budget to Toronto, this is highly recommended and well worth it.

The Planet Traveler's Hostel is a pretty unique hostel, in that it is the "greenest" hostel in all of Canada! This place is full of energy/resource saving technology - heat reclamation & solar thermal heating for the water, geothermal heating for the building, rooftop solar panels for energy (doubles as a great awning if you are relaxing up there too!), and tons of low wattage lighting throughout the hostel.

The great thing about Planet Traveler's is that in addition to being mindful of their ecological footprint as a business, the hostel also looks and feels nice as well! The building itself is modern, simple and immaculately clean, though from the outside it looks kind of looks like an office building. The common area has a fireplace and a TV, and with free wifi available, is a great place to relax and meet fellow backpackers. The rooms are typical hostel rooms, with multiple beds packed into a small space - however, most backpackers are not planning on staying in the hostel itself for too long anyways, so this is a relatively small issue.

Planet Traveler also has a great rooftop bar, a common kitchen and laundry facility, is located just on the edge of Kensington Market (hippie central and a great place for shopping, eating, and people watching), and even rents bikes to guests so that they can tour the city! All in all, this hostel is fantastic - affordable, socially/ecologically responsible, conveniently located, clean, and comfortable!

The Planet Traveler Hostel is a clean and stylish backpacker's with a conscience. They've done everything they can to be eco-friendly, and this positive ethos shines through every aspect of this hostel and in the visitors and staff I meet. Although they are running the hostel using green technology such as photovoltaic electricity (?), they have not compromised on style. In fact, the sleek white of the lobby looks more hotel than hostel, and only the casual travelers lounging comfortably on couches, watching a flat-screen TV give it away. Rooms are small and consist mostly of dorms, but are exceptionally clean and shiny, as are the stylish grey and white washrooms.
There's a nice kitchen and eating area as well, but the true draw is the rooftop deck and bar, which gets plenty of sun reflecting off its solar panels, helping to power the hostel. Friendly travelers invite me to play a game of giant Jenga, and although I decline, I sense a genuine feeling of pride in those around me. It's nice to stay in a place that doesn't just say that it cares, but is actively encouraging conscientious living. There are bikes for rent, free Wi-fi and with it's location right next to the global food and vintage shopping of Kensington Market, this hostel is a lovely find.
