"most expensive city in the world" lists, Tokyo's world-class restaurants and hotels are often priced accordingly. However, the city offers several alternatives, including capsule hotels and the simple guesthouse lodging known as a ryokan. To get a taste of Japan’s cutting-edge position in technology and electronics, a trip to Akihabara, or Electric Town, will awe and inspire any visitor. Transportation to destinations throughout Tokyo is simple, as the city has the most extensive and sophisticated public transportation network in the world. Sushi was invented here, and there's no better place to try it than the Tsukiji fish market (try the sushi breakfast).

When to go

The Japanese take great joy in the country’s four distinct seasons, and celebrate each with unique cuisine and traditions. With that said, there are some that are better than others for tourism purposes. Tokyo ... Read more
gets hot, humid, rainy and crowded during the summer. Winter can be chilly, and while not unbearable, you won’t be able to wander around the city’s beautiful parks. Spring sees a lot of local tourism, with crowds pouring into the city to see the cherry blossoms in March and April and during Golden Week in April/May. Fall is truly an ideal season to visit. The weather is comfortable, the skies are blue, and the foliage turns to striking shades of red and gold.

What an incredible city. Vibrant. Busy. Illuminated. Natural. And all organized in a fashion that makes it easy for non-Japanese tourists to navigate. The people are kind, the prices are good (despite what many people say) and the food is delicious.

Wonderful. Wonderful. Wonderful.

I absolutely loved Tokyo - more so than I expected to, honestly. It's bizarre and entertaining and beautiful and so clean! There is always something to see, no matter where you look or where you are. The food is amazing, the people are kind, it's easy to navigate and has one of the most efficient metro systems I've ever had the pleasure of experiencing. I would love to visit again and explore more of this incredible city.

This is one of my most favorite cities in the world! I was lucky enough to study abroad in nearby Yokohama, so I was able to come to Tokyo often. The atmosphere is so fun and lively. The food is delicious and the culture is amazing. I love the mixture of the cutting edge new meets the traditional old. It's perfect.

A city which is famous for its uniqueness, where the moderenizastion meets the strong traditions harmoniously. I love everything about this metropolis, but its hectic life.

Truly Japan’s bustling capital. A place for both ultramodern and traditions. The world's food capital.

Tokyo is an interesting city. Some of the most fine foods in the world, imperial palaces and temples, anime culture, fast pace of city life, and nature are all mixed. For travelers, it's convenient due to the high functioning metro system. Definitely you need more than 5 days to throughly enjoy the city.

From what I've gathered from films, anime, music videos, etc, this city has exceeded my expectations. Tokyo is always bustling with life and there is an endless list of things to do in the area. My first few steps outside of the train station from Narita were into the noise of the famous Shibuya crossing. Information overload and the aesthetic of the electric city all combine to create for a surreal experience.

Probably one of the fewest places in the world where you would find maximum chaos and maximum order. With each district showing off its own style, it is a city that you can find the century old tradition of Tsukiji tuna auction, the electric town of Akihabara, the classy Ometesando, the everything-cute-heaven Harajuku, the upscale Ginza, the energetic-into-the-night Shinjuku and Shibuya. The city where everyone can find their place.
