Fen", Chinese for "nine portions." During the second World War, the village was used to house prisoners of war, and they were used to mine gold from a nearby gold mine. After the war, mining declined, and the mine was shut down, leading to the village being forgotten for a time. The award winning movie "Spirited Away" takes place here.

Unique little town in the hills. Easy to do a day trip as its not a long ride from Taipei. It gets packed with tourists but worth it for a nice getaway for a day trip.

Beautiful view of the city and the ocean on a clear day in Jiu Fen. It's a trek coming from Taipei we took the MRT then a city bus to Jiu Fen for a total travel time of 1.5 hours. They are known for being the inspiration to the animated Movie Spirited Away. You probably need 2-3 hours here to look at all the cute shops and good eats. Must have the “ice cream roll” and the tapioca ball dessert! Jui Fen is also known for their teahouse with a beautiful view

It's not exactly located in Taipei but Jiu Fen (and Shih Fen) is easily accessible for half a day trip from Taipei. Some call it the Santorini of Taiwan. Besides tea drinking, you will enjoy climbing narrow stairs with shops (selling crafts or foodstuffs like fishballs, yam / taro balls, beancurd) and restaurants just located side by side.

come on a misty day, the grey clouds add a certain aura to the place. jiu fen served as inspiration for miyazaki's spirited away. home of glutinous taro balls and many tea houses with spectacular views. avoid weekends and the narrow streets can get really cramped

You'll have beautiful views of the city if you take a trip up to Jiu Fen. They are known for their delicious and chewy tapioca balls (tang yuan)! Jiu Fen was also the inspiration of Hayao Miyazaki’s Spirited Away. Amazing huh? There are cute little shops to buy souvenirs and trinkets, but like the rest of Taipei, just enjoy the culture and food that this little area offers.

Jiu Fen is traditional place of Taiwan. This place became famous because of one Taiwan movie. Many types of food sold here like 'tie-dan', Taiwan tea and etc.

Fun place but try not to go during weekends. It gets so crowded that you only see the back of peoples head.

Jiu Fen was previously famous for the gold discovering activities, especially during Japanese Ruled period. Now is a very popular tourism spot and famous for the traditional foods like Taro-balls, plum syrup.

Great place! There's a gold mine museum. 4pm is the best time to visit, after you visit the museum, it's just about to get dark, all light are turned on. Very beautiful.

This is a little ways out of the city, but you can actually take a bus there (takes about an hr) that leaves from the ZhongXiao Fu Xing MRT stop, convenient and cheap! It is known for its view of Taipei, which is breathtaking at sunset! Its a place to go on a day trip because you can walk the streets and buy tourist-y things and eat some authentic food as well!

this historic mining town is steeped in taiwanese history. traveling here is like traveling to a different era where times were simpler. check out the winding cobbled streets and try their local yam and taro balls.

Not easily accessible unless you have a car (or know how to take public transit, if that is at all possible). JF is a city lost and preserved in time, when locals made their living through mining and eventually left the area in pursuit of a better life and jobs. Some came back and over time this became a heavily visited old town. Words cannot describe this place, as it has different characters when sunny and when it is raining. A few films have also made this place super famous. Tang Yuen (dessert mochi ball soup) is very famous here (particularly those made with taro) and do not miss the old shop that sells premium pineapple cakes (feng li su), with no preservatives (so if you buy one, consume in less than a week).
