Description
Originally a Greek trading post, the Port of Split is now the largest passenger port in Croatia. Bustling with ships, the harbor offers a scenic look out toward the Adriatic.

The first thing that strikes you on arrival in Split, Croatia, is how very busy it is. The quayside is lined with local ferry boats -- some wood-trimmed and charmingly old fashioned, with room for no more than about 12 passengers -- and there are hordes of young backpackers embarking or disembarking as they make their way around one of Europe's most beautiful regions.

Bigger ferries and cruise ships come into the main terminal, and from there it's a short but uphill walk to the Old Town with its market and the world-famous jewel that lies at Split's heart, the magnificent Palace of Diocletian.

En route you'll encounter plenty of those gap-year kids, some toting backpacks or wheeling cases, others sitting -- rapt in young love -- on the many wooden, sea-facing benches that line the harbor front.

Split's youthful buzz arises partly from its status as a university town and partly from its position as a jumping-off point for exploring Dalmatia's lovely coast and islands. So it's hardly surprising that it has such a young population -- and the affordable bars and lively nightlife that go with it.

But older travelers arriving by cruise ship should not feel left out, for there is much to enjoy in this delightful port, from elegant pastel-colored tea shops and great restaurants to even better shops.

There's also a museum featuring the works of Ivan Mestrovic, one of Croatia's greatest sculptors. And, of course, there's that magnificent palace, built by a Roman emperor around 2,000 years ago.

It was the Romans who put Split on the map with the building of Diocletian's Palace, the sprawling 4th century residence that now encloses a welter of Roman ruins within its walls. It's fascinating to wander the cobblestoned streets within the palace where fashionable boutiques and trendy clubs alternate with crumbling pillars and medieval churches. Stroll the harbourside promenade or people-watch from one of its cafes. Climb up woodsy Marjan hill for great views over the city or plunge into the sparkling waters from one of Split's beaches. There are so many sights to see and so many day trips from Split; the nightlife and restaurants offer such quality and variety it's impossible to be bored.

Split ferry port may sometimes look as the most chaotic place in Split if you don't know how to find your way to your ferry destination.

You can either sit down by a cafe to enjoy a refreshing drink or a cup of coffee and admire the beautiful port and the sea and all the old ships, or the historical buildings of the old town on the other side. At night time the port gets packed of people and music and the atmosphere is amazing. Definitely worth stopping by during the night. Centrally located.

The port or harbor of Split is a beautiful place! A lot of shops and restaurants are located along the harbor and the city center is only a stones throw from there ;) I loved sitting at the water and watch the sun go down :)

Gayle and I spent a warm and most pleasant day in Split last September. We came in on a shuttle boat from our Cruise ship, and particularly enjoyed walking the promenade and enjoying the view (including all the expensive boats).

Most likely the most iconic section of Split. Walking along the water you see a plethora of yachts and small boats with a lot of quaint coffee shops and restaurants adjourning the water. If you wander in towards the city you will find a lot of shops, restaurants, coffee shops, ice cream vendors, and historic sites including an underground cavern and a bell tower you can climb. A must stop while in Split

Split is a Mediterranean city on the eastern shores of the Adriatic Sea, centred around the ancient Roman Palace of the Emperor Diocletian and its bay and port. We enjoyed walking on the promenade were there are a lot of restaurants and food vendors.
