Split Holidays

Split, Croatia, is built around the site of Roman Emperor Diocletian's palace, still inhabited today, although transformed into a mess of houses and chapels. Merchants and travelers mix in the hectic, exciting bustle on the Adriatic sea whose jumbled history is accessible through the modern port, receiving ferries from Italy daily. The top ... Read more
attractions in the city are the Historical Complex of Split with the Palace of Diocletian, shopping at the Pazar (Green Market), and visiting the Diocletian's Palace.

Weather

If you’re dreaming about a summer spent dipping your toes in the Adriatic, unfortunately you’re not alone. Summer, specifically July and August, is peak tourist season on the coast and islands of Croatia, so ... Read more
though you’ll likely enjoy the nice weather, you’ll have to endure exorbitant hotel rates and crowds, crowds, crowds. Summer is better spent inland at cities like Zagreb, where you’ll encounter an entirely different story: fewer tourists, more bargains, and cooler temperatures. The coast is much more pleasant in late spring and early fall when air and water temperatures are still warm, but places are cheaper and less crowded. Winter is also not bad along the coast, though it gets cold and snowy inland.

If you’re looking for a great weekend trip from Zagreb, try embarking on a four and a half hour drive down to Split. Split is a picturesque city on the coast full of foreign markets and food. The town’s vibe is relaxed – it’s a phenomenal place to sit outside sipping wine while taking in the view. The real highlight of the city is Diocletian's Palace, which was built for an ancient Roman emperor.

Split is wonderful place to see in Croatia. I loved the coast and I would love to see it again. To be honest, I would definitely want to visit again this summer, but we are still not sure. Although, Split is a incredible city. The thing we liked the most was the famous Dioklecijan Palace, which is absolutely extraordinary. The tour guide explained us everything and we were fascinated with it. It belonged to the Romans Emperor which is super cool to listen and see. Although everything is kind of different there are still some thing left from that time.
I recommend this place to everyone.

Split is great place to wander in June. Loads of historical buildings, restaurants, a maze of streets. Compact size, friendly people.

We just got back from a short one week vacation from Split, Croatia and I have to tell you that it is a real gem for anyone who loves to spend quality time in a quality place. This location has it all - historical cities, monuments for those who like to learn a bit while traveling (just a few of my recommendations: Diocletian's Palace,Cathedral and Bell Tower of St. Domnius, Ivan Mestrovic Gallery), the perfect climate for everyone, and of course the magical Adriatic Sea. If you book a hotel make sure to book as close to the shore as possible. Although this time we chartered a great boat from Sailo (last time we had a good deal with them in Oyster Bay as well). It is like killing a bird with one stone - if you know what I mean - you have the accommodation and you have the entertainment, all in one. And of course, if you are a gourmand you will be in a paradise: amazing local cuisine, fresh seafood etc. Best week in Europe this far. What do you think we should visit next? Any recommendation?

Split was my favourite place in Croatia, it's beautiful and there are lots of lovely places to eat and drink. You really feel like you're on holiday here and it's less crowded and slightly less pricey than Dubrovnik (according to my experience!)

This Roman style historical city is full of character! There are plenty of sights to see from the bell tower to the harbour front!
The shops and cafes have plenty on offer and the nightlife is full of dance clubs

If you love beach vibes and tourists this is the place for you. For me Split was beautiful but the crowd of tourists kind of made it less special, but you just have to venture out of the main town and you will find some really beautiful things to see !

Enjoyed a half day exploring here. Lots of beautiful history, but honestly not my favorite place in Croatia. Half to one day was enough for me.

nice city direct at the coast, several beaches near the city, very nice old city, to reach by airplane, ferryboat and car no problem.
