This white town on a hill is just a couple hours south of Rome and is about as picturesque as it gets before you hit the Amalfi coast. The water is clear, the beach is softly sandy, and there are plenty of places to munch delicious spaghetti alle vongole.

Sperlonga is one of those dead-in-the-winter, packed-in-the-summer vacation spots. The warm, sandy beaches are inviting and there is plenty of hiking and exploring to occupy any adventurer in the surrounding countryside.

During the days, the beaches are full of families playing in the sand and warm water. After siesta, the town comes alive for dinner and dancing. Ristorante Bar Lido was actually quite tasty and offered spectacular views of the sunset over the water.

One of the nights I spent here, there was a concert going on in the main square. Against the backdrop of the ocean, a woman sang Michael Jackson covers to an adoring crowd of Italians. As hilarious as it sounds, it was actually really enjoyable and the crowd was really friendly.

If you plan to go in the summer, be sure to book a hotel early, as stuff tends to book quickly-- this seems to be a popular vacation town for Italians in July and August. At only 1.5 hours south (by train) from Rome, it's easy to see why this miniature paradise attracts so many. Don't worry, though. It's not a tourist trap. These vacationers are, almost exclusively, Italian. During the 5 days I spent in Sperlonga, I only encountered one other English-speaking person, and he was Australian!
