Bulgaria and has come to symbolize the city. The history of the monastery along with its beautiful architecture are reason enough to visit, but it will also give you a better understanding of the Bulgarian people. They identify with this monastery as the religious center of their country, and there is no better way to know the people than to understand and experience their most important site.

The Rila Monastery is an Orthodox monastery and is also on the UNESCO world heritage list. The architecture is amazing and is also located in between some mountains. There is also a lot of history to learn here. It is a fair bit out of Sofia though and could take a whole day to visit this area however it is a must see!

Really cool place to see Bulgarian history, religion and culture. Don't leave without getting some rakia made by the monks at the monastery!

Beautiful drive through the mountains to an equally beautiful monastery. It is free but the various museums cost a small fee to enter. We checked out the old kitchen - very cool! And there is a pretty tasty restaurant serving up traditional dishes at the back of the monastery to complete a great half-day road trip from Sofia.

Fantastic setting in the mountains of Bulgaria about ninety minutes drive south of Sofia. The monastery is colorful on the outside and impressive painting in the interior. One can hike above on an array of trails offering wonderful views.

Tucked into a hidden valley the elegant architecture of the monastery provides a great contrast to the rugged landscape that surrounds it. I especially liked the murals depicting sinners in hell and the beautifully painted exterior walls and arches. The monastery is about 2 hours outside of Sofia, depending on traffic. It can also be reached by bus.

A 2 hour drive from Sofia. A UNESCO World Heritage site, Rila Monastery was founded in the 10th century by St John of Rila, a hermit canonized by the Orthodox Church. His ascetic dwelling and tomb became a holy site and were transformed into a monastic complex which played an important role in the spiritual and social life of medieval Bulgaria.

I was able to hire a driver to take us to the Rila Monastery through my hostel. It's probably a good thing because, according to the guide books and from what I heard, it would have been pretty difficult and time consuming to get there. If you're in Sofia, I really recommend taking the side trip out there because it's such a pretty monastery. The surrounding area is beautiful. There are also some nice local restaurants. I got to try the soup that the monks eat or would have eaten. There's also a grade a donut stand nearby :)

In 2007, it was almost impossible to go there from Sofia. I had to take 2 buses to go, and 3 to come back. But it worth it.

Very atmospheric historic place with couple of amazing museums, in which you can find loads of ancient treasures and history and walk out absolutely impressed for the rest of the day.
You can also stay here overnight, it will cost you around 15 leva and the whole room might be only for you. Of course don’t expect a lot of comfort, this is a monastery. Suggesting also to take some tissues/toilet paper and soap, as there’s non in the toilets. However the experience is absolutely worth it!
P.S. Don’t forget to cover your shoulders and legs, otherwise the guards will not let you in to the monastery area!
