Slovenia Holidays

How is it possible that Slovenia is not overrun by tourism? The country at the crossroads of Central, Eastern and Southern Europe has everything you could ever want in a European vacation, just on a smaller scale. Venetian towns and spectacular beaches line the coast, but it's only 27 miles long. The sexy capital, Ljubljana, might only have a ... Read more
quarter-million residents, but that doesn't diminish the hip student-filled clubs or casual outdoor restaurants or cafe lifestyle. Slovenia is big on culture; their national heroes are a poet and an architect, and the former military barracks near Ljubljana, Metelkova, have been turned into a complex for funky nightclubs, bars and the coolest youth hostel around. Add to that karst caverns, mountainous hiking trails connected by a network of 100 overnight alpine huts and lodges, vineyard-covered rolling hills, spa villages, decadent sweets, breathtakingly gorgeous mountain lakes, and skiing good enough to breed many a Slovene Olympian, and you've got yourself an active week or two vacation.

With a month to kill between projects and a keen desire for a mix of culture and adventure, I was headed to Europe. Having little experience with the continent, I asked a friend where he would go. His answer was quick: Slovenia. Slovenia? Really? And yet, having been, I can say he didn't steer me wrong. Relatively inexpensive, genuinely friendly, and boasting not only old-world charm and history but stunning natural beauty as well, it's my new insider's pick for Europe. For a short trip, the compact area between the capital (Ljubljana), Lake Bled, Triglav National Park, and the coastal city of Piran (formerly part of the Venetian Empire) makes an excellent itinerary.

Most of Slovenia is like something out of a fairytale: a breathtakingly beautiful terrain filled not only with rugged, snow-topped mountains, but azure lakes leading to waterfalls, charming seaside towns along the Adriatic Sea, and lush forests, which cover 55 percent of the terrain. Even Slovenia’s underground is gorgeous, thanks to the ethereal Škocjan and Postojna caves. With three impressive mountain ranges, it offers arguably the best hiking in Europe. There's also a fascinating history here (the country was the economic seat of former Yugoslavia and much of the mountain warfare in WWI was fought in the mountains). The towns are also charming, with many boasting a nice blend of modern life and medieval style architecture. It's no wonder that many locals adoringly dub their country sLOVEenia!

This is a great small country to visit. It is very picturesque with mountains and small lakes and not at all crowded. The people are very friendly and the food we had was delicious. We would definitely revisit.

Find a car with a big enough gas tank and you could probably drive the circumference of Slovenia in one go. And yet, there's everything you would ever want in the perfect European vacation here: ski-worthy mountains, Venetian coastal towns, a hip capital filled with university students, Alpine lakes with beautiful castles, spa towns, outdoor pursuits to last you a month straight (rafting, rock climbing, luge, etc) and some of the best hiking in Europe. And all at half the prices of Switzerland. I'm always hesitant to sing its praises too loudly since part of it's charm is having avoided the tourist beachfront infrastructure of the Croatian Dalmatian coast, but I love Slovenia.
