Located right in the heart of Chinatown, and just steps away from a subway station, the entrance is a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it door sandwiched between two shops. As I walked up the narrow stairway of the shophouse, I found the lobby area of Maple Lodge – no shoes allowed. Beds are lined up in typical hostel style, with bunk beds leaning again the walls. Each bed comes with an electrical outlet for digital nomads to charge up their electronic devices as well as a nightlight. The hostel is near a heritage centre where you can learn more about the Chinese immigrants who made their home here, and Chinatown Point shopping centre is a five minute walk away via the underground subway, providing air-conditioned comfort when it gets too hot outside.

Beary Good is a cute little hostel with brightly painted walls and teddy bears everywhere. All of the dorm rooms are co-ed and they have a mix of bunks and single beds. All the beds are the same size and have the same mattresses, it’s just that some offer more privacy than others. The bathrooms are clean and I like that they provide bodywash. The lounge is a great place to hang out and meet other travellers and you can entertain yourself by watching a movie, playing PS3 games, or borrowing one of the netbooks. The WiFi even reaches the dorms. There’s free toast and jam in the morning and they’re pretty generous about offering free coffee all day. The hostel is only a few steps from Chinatown MRT station, but it’s kind of hard to find it the first time – look up for the blue bear sign!

The Beary Good Hostel is a nice little hostel with a fantastic location. The Chinatown MRT is right at its doorstep. The hostel has a cute theme with bears littered all around the place. Rates are relatively cheap given its really convenient location. Toilets are shared but kept very clean and look very new. Breakfast is also included in the bed charge. The dormitories are spacious and kept clean and lockers are provided. Worry not as despite its cheap price, the dormitories are air-conditioned and there is no curfew. The lounge area although small, is very homely and comfortable. Great place to meet people and chill as entertainment like wii, is available. There is free wifi internet access and netbooks available for use. The Beary Good Hostel is the ideal place for backpackers on a budget as it provides almost everything at a reasonable price and without much rules and regulations!
