the homes built in the traditional architectural style named Gassho-zukuri. Gassho-zukuri otherwise known as "prayer hands construction", is usually characterized by thatched roofs resembling two monks hands joined in prayer. The buildings are often three to four stories high and built to withstand the snow and harsh elements that the region experiences in the winter months.

These houses were declared a UNESCO world heritage site in 1995. They are famous for their traditional gassho-zukuri farmhouses, which get their name from looking like monk's hands pressed together praying. Some of which are more than 250 years old and still standing strong. It's a very unique place to visit in Japan.

The historic villages of Shirakawa-go and Gokayama, located in the southeastern part of Toyama, is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site and a national monument to some of Japan's oldest known human settlements. The homes of this remote mountain villages, which date back to the 8th century, are built in the ancient 'gassho-zukuri' style of architecture (which features steep, thatched roofs and use no nails in the construction) and have been immaculately restored and maintained. Interested visitors can even stay overnight in a historic guesthouse in the Toga area, but if you're just visiting for the day, be sure to stop inside the Murakami House to enjoy a cup of hot tea around the home's open hearth, while the village chiefs regale you with the village's history.

It's a place you must go before you die. During different seasons you would see very different scenes. Also, you would be amazed by the wisdom of people who designed this great architect which harmonized with the nature.

Loved the Gassho-style houses. Make sure you go inside at least one of them to see the way it's built.
