Local from Shanghai

As an admitted sucker for things that are shiny and new, I tend to prefer newer hotels than the Jin Jiang, which was originally opened for business in the mid-1920s. The hotel’s age is revealed in the lack of bells and whistles and fancy upgrades such as ipod docks that come standard in new hotels. The bathrooms were also a little dark for my liking (though still perfectly clean and nice). Still, accents like oversized windows in many of the rooms and a superb location in the middle of the Former French Concession lend the Jin Jiang an undeniable appeal. The large suites and upgraded rooms have a lot of Old World charm, but the small standard rooms felt a bit dingy to me.

Los Angeles

I arrived exhausted to Shanghai and was very happy when I saw the Jin Jiang Hotel. The lobby is very welcoming with a grand piano the center piece of a comfortable seating area.
I was quickly checked in and directed to my room. It was lovely! A queen size bed with soft linens, comforter, and wonderfully soft pillows. The bathroom was the best part, great shower and lots of built in mirrors with a bathtub you could practically swim in. It's in a very good location and there are lots of restaurants and shopping as well as sight seeing within easy walking distance.
It's also got an interesting place in history as this is where Richard Nixon and Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai signed the "Shanghai Communique" in 1972. There are lots of photos in the lobby showing highlights of the event. I'm a history buff so that intrigued me.
The hotel offers spa services and there is an excellent and beautifully designed Indian restaurant two doors from the lobby entrance. I would recommend this hotel to anyone traveling to Shanghai.

Local from Shanghai

Right in the former French Concession this old world hotel is very beautiful and has been known to host many heads of states for dinners and meetings. An interesting and well done mix of local and western features makes this one of my favorite local hotels in the city. The rooms are quite ornate and the bathrooms are spacious with lots of room to get ready in. I absolutely hate the small bathrooms that are typical in many chinese hotels. There are multiple banquet dining rooms which are crucial to Chinese business dinners (and a lot of baiju to go with it). One the whole a very nice hotel with helpful and friendly staff that is well trained and prepared to assist at anytime. The location is also ideal with the mx of western influences in one of the older parts of the city, a must see and walk about area of town.

On an unassuming corner in the former French concession sits the Jin Jiang hotel. It’s across the street from the hotel and gardens from the Okura Hotel. The Jin Jiang is comprised of 5 buildings, the Cathay building being the oldest, was established in 1925. The hotel has the honor of being the guest house for many heads of state since China’s opening to the west; US Presidents Carter, Reagan and Nixon were among its guest as well as Queen Elizabeth II and Fidel Castro. The Cathay Building is the main hotel building, but there is a hotel section sandwiched between the serviced apartments in the Grosvener building. The lobby is unassuming, and reception fairly standard. The halls of the guest floors are trimmed in purple, which I liked and found to be more exciting than what I was anticipating. The guestrooms are modern and clean with tastefully selected furnishings and Chinese art. The restaurant boasts several private dining rooms and serves traditional Chinese fare. There are also other restaurants in the building that are not affiliated with the hotel that have international and local cuisine. It’s not the most ultra modern hotel in Shanghai, but the history and heritage of the property make it a great choice, and the location is superb.
