Schwangau Holidays

Schwangau is a municipality in Bavaria, Germany. The eponymous village is tiny, and doesn’t even have a railway station, but is close to the originally-Roman town of Fussen, home to St Mang’s Basilica, which contains the oldest fresco in Germany. More importantly, Neuschwanstein Castle (or Schloss Neuschwanstein) is even closer. This cute ... Read more
nineteenth century Romanesque Revival palace was built as a retreat and homage to Richard Wagner, and was the inspiration for Walt Disney’s Sleeping Beauty castle. Another famous castle in the area is Schloss Hohenschwangau, a nineteenth century palace that was built over the site of a twelfth century castle that was deemed to have walls too thin to be defensible. Schwangau acts as a kind of transition zone between the Alpine foothills to the south and a more restrained – yet still hilly – landscape to the north. It’s outstandingly beautiful, peppered with rugged hills and pristine lakes, and offers a wealth of hiking trails for anyone who wants to grab a German sausage and a slab of rye bread and head into the hills.

The smooth, rolling hills. The crisp autumn air. The friendly people, picture-friendly homes. The clear lake and small river. The gorgeous gothic castles. Everything about this area is amazing, enchanting, and makes one feel really far removed from the troubles of daily living in a large city. The roads are fun to drive too. They have very long bike baths!

Charming countryside is particularly lovely in the spring when the cows are enjoying the green grass. Lovely views of the castle. There are also some nice restaurants and little markets to explore. Create a picnic and go enjoy it among the cows.
