It is home to the largest Japanese community outside Japan in the world. My friend Henry got mistaken for a Japanese, when they started calling him "Japon".

Very busy and congested but for all the right reasons. Good sushi hidden amongst the basic commercialized stuff.

Local from São Paulo

Sao Paulo is the city with most japanese immigrants in the world!
This neighbourhood is all about the japanese community not only in Sao Paulo, but also in Brazil. But not only japanese, today is more like a asian community, you will find japanese, korean and chinese restaurants, stores, outfits, arts.

A cool place to hang with your friends and family. If you plan on going, try to go on Sunday. Although it'll be very crowd it's worth, the food market it's only on Sundays. There's a lot of great places to eat. The only downside in my opinion it's the prices on the stores.

Japantown. With tons of Chinese. No wars, just an amazing experience to the senses. Transported away from Brazil, some restaurants might only have chinese speaking attendants. Once I managed to pay with leftover RMB from my China trip. Go for Itiriki bakery and you'll think about being in a japanese shojo anime. Lots of stuff to eat, decent restaurant and food street, Liberdade is crowded with the forever asian culture craving locals. Try the green melona ice cream, cause of its square korean goodness (oh yeah, Korea makes a feat. too).

Check out this japanese district in the heart of the city, now pretty much occupied by chinese and koreans as well.

Liberdade is the Japanese area of Sao Paulo. There are more Japanese in Liberdade than their are Japanese in any city outside of Japan. And have they turned that area into a beautiful oasis. While Liberdade has always been associated with the Japananese, I saw Chinese and Korean restaurants when I visited Liberdade a couple of years back.

Must see if you are visiting Sao Paulo. Liberdade is the place which started as the heart of Japanese community in Brazil. Streets are lined with lanterns, japanese style. Nowadays you can find some great shops and restaurants. Worth a visit for sure!
On sundays there's a street market, but it can get really crowded. It is at the intersection of Rua Galvão Bueno with Praça da Liberdade, where is also a subway station with the same name.

This is the place for oriental products in São Paulo.
Arrive by the Metrô or be prepared to pay expensive parking fees.
Tip: During weekends there are several parkings in Galvão Bueno street priced R$10 for the whole day. (This is the price for half hour during the week.)

Liberdade is the Brazilian name for their Japan Town. Sao Paulo has over 100,000 residence of Japanese heritage, a Japanese diaspora that came over in the 19th century to farm the land and try a new life in this vast land of opportunity.

And so, like many major cities in the US like San Francisco and Los Angeles, there is a Japanese community here that has half on to motherland traditions and culture, while assimilating into the mixing pot that is Brazil.

You can come here and find familiar items, from Neko good luck cats to Mochi, to Japanese brands of foods and drinks. The are is marked by a Torii, or traditional Red Shrine gate.

In the past 10 years, Japanese-Brazilan singers were all the rage in Japan, and there was a popular TV show about Japanese sisters that were separated by their poor conditions as children, and over decades led separate lives in Japan and Brazil, only to reunite in their 70's.

I have met several Japanese-Brazilian beauties, and the combination of the delicate Japanese features and the carefree samba friendliness of the Brazilian culture is both an intriguing and alluring combination!

São Paulo has the highest Japanese population of any city in the world outside of Japan and the Liberdade district, just south of downtown, is where that community has historically assembled. Here you'll find multitude of Japanese restaurants, sushi bars, markets, and shops, all catering to the local community as well as the many tourists who flock to this incredibly vibrant neighborhood. Liberdade's most distinctive features are the red Suzuranto lamps hanging over its main streets.
