Description
This broad, open plaza was founded nearly half a millennium ago by city founder Pedro de Valdivia, and still serves as the civic and social center of the city. Though the Plaza once held a gallows, ... Read more
it's now filled with strolling santinguinos, art shows, comedians and street theater productions. It is surrounded by historic buildings, including the Catedral Metropolitano, the Governor's Palace (now the Central Post Office), and the historic Court of Justice (now the Natural History Museum). Some 470 years after its original construction, it's still the best place in town to sit with an ice cream and watch Santiago bustle by.

The Plaza de Armas de Santiago is the basis of the urban conformation of the city, as it constitutes the quadrilateral from which its initial design was drawn.
In this point of the city, chess players, cartoonists, different street artists and all the cultural diversity of Chileans and immigrants are intertwined

The Plaza de Armas de Santiago is the point of the city that concentrates the historical and cultural heritage of Chile. With buildings that go back to the beginnings of the colony. It is also a meeting point for several immigrant cultures in the country.

Plaza de Armas is the heart of Santiago. It's a starting point. You have the Metropolitan Cathedral, mail post and a lot of places nearby to check it out.

Center of Santiago, the main square of the city where you can see Metropolitan Cathedral of Santiago, Central Post Office Building, Palacio de la Real Audiencia de Santiago, and the building that serves as the seat of local government for Santiago.

Plaza des Armas is the main square in Santiago. It's worth strolling past to see it and the cathedral. It's quite touristy with loads of crowds, street performers and panhandlers.

Santiago's main square is right at the center of touristic Santiago. Home to the history museum and the Catedral Metropolitana. A good place to begin a walking tour. Pleasant even if the individual sights aren't particularly spectacular.

Local from Providencia

Plaza de Armas is Santiago's neuralgic center. Although it's small, it has lots to offer for travelers who want to get to know more of Chile's culture and architecture. Local comedians usually perform in the square and it's a great place to try some of Chile's best street food. Plaza de Armas is located next to the Methropolitan Cathedral which is also a great place to visit.

A great city park, Plaza de Armas is, literally, the heart of Santiago (all distances to the city from around the country refer to this point). It's a lush park with tons of fountains and sculptures and roaming street performers too. It's a popular meeting spot for locals and place for kids to play--perfect for people watching.

Plaza de Armas is the center of Santiago. You'll be standing in the plaza if you're looking at the Metropolitan Cathedral and the National History Museum. There's a subway stop at the plaza.

The Plaza de Armas is the very core of Santiago. It is here that the founder of Santiago, and the leader of the Spanish Conquistadores, Pedro de Valdivia built his home (which is now the Correo Central aka Post Office).

Lively old world central that is easily accessible by the metro (how we got here) and multiple other modes of transportation, the Plaza de Armas is the civic center of Santiago. The pedestrian shopping streets surrounding the main plaza is quite fun to browse as well.

It is essential to visit La Moneda and Plaza de Armas. There you will see a statue of Salvador Allende Gossens (a true hero.) This tells the true story of Chile - you will not see any statue of Pinochet (the dictator who overthrew the Allende elected government in 1973.)

Used to be a great plaza, now it's been converted into a concrete square, with little greenery.
