With top-rated restaurants, hip boutiques, and chic galleries, it is no wonder this bohemian quarter of Santiago and former home of Pablo Neruda is so popular. Antique homes house artsy and ... Read more
intellectual residents. In the evenings, live music and DJ beats pour from the doors of the pubs and nightclubs that accommodate the city’s fun and trendy crowds. Despite its popularity, the tree-lined neighborhood retains a village-like atmosphere and is a great place to wander through. Weekend handicraft fairs are another delightful element.

Bellavista offers a break from the imposing towers of apartments and offices that crowd much of the city. Its lower, more antique architecture is a pleasure in and of itself — you could wander these blocks for hours just looking at the different styles of homes and store fronts. It’s no surprise that Chilean poet and national treasure Pablo Neruda called this neighborhood home. One of the poet’s three homes, La Chascona (Fernando Marquez de la Plata 0192), was built in 1950 and is now open to the public for guided tours ($4.000 CLP per person, $1.500 for students and seniors). If you start your day here, you’ll likely be inspired to keep soaking in the artistic culture that is abundant in the Bellavista quarter. Stroll through the streets and you’ll see a wide variety of art galleries, small theaters, and boutique shops. If you’re looking for a souvenir, Bellavista is known for its jewellery shops that sell lapis lazuli, a special Chilean stone. And if you’re visiting on the weekend, you won’t be able to miss the sprawling handicraft market that sets up on Saturdays and Sundays.

Though there's still a fun vibe provided by students from the nearby university, gentrification is creeping into Bellavista. Still, if you're looking for a safe neighbourhood to stroll around, combined with a drink or a meal, it's not bad.

I love this area for its restaurants, bars, lounges and night clubs. The nightlife here happens late, usually after 11pm.

This is where the nightlife is at! Careful on your way home as there are pickpockets... better not to take your phone out of your pocket at 3am!

"Bar Constitución" is a popular club, or my personal favourite, "La Feria" for great electronic music.

This district comes alive in the evening when the trendy clubs and restaurants get packed by the young chic and fun loving. By day this area is serene and layback with cafes and outdoor dining areas line the streets.

Barrio Bellavista is the major bohemian section of Santiago. When one thinks of Barrio Bellavista, one can't help but think of the late Pablo Neruda, the Noble Peace Prize winner who lived here for most of his life.

This is one of the nicest areas of Santiago to just walk around in. The houses are colorful, the restaurants are top notch, the street art is fascinating, and the fact that it is home to a Pablo Neruda house (there are a number around Chile; see also Casa de Isla Negra and La Sebastiana) is, for me at least, a great bonus. Plan at least a full afternoon here.

Santiago's Boheme, go for a drink at "Galindo" and a juicy asado at Don Eladio (Pio Nono)

In my opinion it's the coolest place to stay and go out in Santiago. It's filled with both locals and tourists, cool bars and restaurans, art galleries and cafés and it's not too far from the airport.
Patio Bellavista was a highlight of my last visit to Santiago. It's sort of a posh mall but with restaurants, bars and clubs. Me and my friends went twice to this place called Backstage, a very cool jazz bar with some great live shows. Both times we had what was said to be the largest pizza in all of Santiago, if I'm not wrong it was something like 60 centimeters in diameter! Make sure you (and hopefully 7 of your friends) order this one, you can each choose a flavor, up to 8 flavors in the same pie!
