This legendary bar's name roughly translates to "fleabag", and one look at its proudly grungy vibe tells you why. La Piojera has been around for the better part of a century, but what it's really ... Read more

Local from Providencia

La piojera is as Chilean as it gets! You need to try their famous terremoto drink while eating a plate of chorrillanas..The place is good to hang out with friends and locals. Just one tip, if you do not enjoy dive bars you would not like this place.

Local from Santiago

In 1922, the president of Chile at the time, Arturo Alessandri Palma, was invited to La Piojera by some friends. His reaction was, “And you’ve brought me to this piojera?” (piojera meaning “ordinary”). Such was the way in which La Piojera earned its name. It’s a place for locals and few tourists can be seen. It’s famous for serving the terremoto (a potent drink which combines wine, pineapple ice-cream, and fernet). It also serves huge portions of typical Chilean dishes, like the chorrillana (fries, mixed meats, fried onions, and fried eggs). Manu Chao always visits when in town.

The terremoto (meaning earthquake) is a highly potent alcoholic beverage. It’s a mixture of red wine, fernet (an Italian spirit) and pineapple ice-cream. It’s so tasty that it’s easy to drink the whole glass in one or two slurps... but be careful. You’ll be face down on the floor before you realise it after one too many. La Piojera is by far the best place to try your first terremoto if you want to experience the real life of the locals.

Located just next to the "Mercado Central", this is the bar to try the "terremoto", chilean drink. Terremoto it's a type of sweet fermented wine with a pineapple ice cream, after I mixed a lot tasted better, but for sure is not one of my favorite drinks.
La Piojera, is the place that goes every type of people, so don't expect to be a really "organized" place. Women alone can feel a bit awkward, as there is a lot men. I think closes at 11pm. I been there around 3pm and the place was already full. Well, I really liked, I was with friends and I had a lot fun. It's a really relax place. They serve food too, but I didn't try.

If you're gonna come to Santiago, you should come to this place and have a "Terromoto" cocktail. That's a drink made with wine, pineapple ice cream, and a little Fernet. As the ice cream melts, the drink gets better.

This place has a great ambience. And, if you went to Pat O'Brien's in New Orleans to try a "Hurricane", you need to come try the Chilean equivalent.

Provecho
