Local from Providencia

This hostel is huge! From the outside it looks small and hidden but it hides spacious rooms and common areas and an amazing-looking pool. The staff is not so friendly but you can tell they are working at a hostel because they like meeting new people and hanging out. So I guess this is an interesting hostel for people who want to party and have a good time with fellow travelers. The hostel is located in the Plaza Yungay/Barrio Brazil/Metro Cumming area, which can be pretty fun at night but I advised coming back to the hostel in a group because it is on a very dark street and the area may not be as safe as it looks in the day.

Local from Santiago

Visually, this hostel grabbed my attention as soon as I walked in. The reception area is centred around a huge, wooden bar-like space, with low-lighting beating down from above. This made me feel really cosy and at home. I also liked the fact that the hostel was just half a block away from Plaza Brasil — it’s a particularly neighbourly area of the city. When I first entered the hostel, I saw the bar on the left-hand side. It was quite a charming space, with a rustic design and managed by a Filipino of all things. It was a place to play pool, or ping pong, or to watch TV and all three things really appeal to me, so I was happy with that. However, I wasn’t to sure about the management. They seemed to be a little strict with their staff and that only goes to generate a tense atmosphere.

I didn’t like this hostel very much at all. The smell of fresh coffee when walking through the entrance — the hostel’s bar, named “Los Insolentes” has coffee on tap all day — was really the only thing special about this place. The rooms were basic, which I suppose is ok if you’re on a budget, but even when travelling on a budget I like to stay in a place with a friendly atmosphere. The staff were pleasant enough, but some of their rules were pretty weird and just reflected an environment in which employees have to watch what they say or work under the roving eye of a strict, controlling management. The lounge and breakfast area could have done with a bit of sprucing up too. Everything was a bit bedraggled and in need of a re-paint.
