Local from Providencia

This hostel was very simple. Hostal de la Barra is a hostel for people who want to spend some money and get to know other travelers but without having to compromise on hygiene and décor. Its common areas are small but clean and elegant. The place looks like it could also be great for people who like some peace and quiet every once in a while. The staff was really friendly and helpful. The location is really good in my opinion as it is in the Lastarria neighborhood. It is close to hip bars, pubs and restaurants but also to designer stores and interesting bookstores. It is what you call a hipster neighborhood. However, it is also close to Santa Lucía hill, one of the biggest attractions in the city, so Hostal de la Barra can also be good for people who are interested in sightseeing.

Local from Santiago

I loved the fact that this hostel was situated right at the foot of the city’s hill, Santa Lucia. It’s also just a few steps away from the Lastarrias neighbourhood which is full of really nice coffee shops and small book shops :— perfect for anyone who loves to get in on the trendy scene of the cities that they visit. I was looked after when I arrived by a little Italian girl, who was really nice, and had only been in Chile for a few months. I loved the fact that it was a really clean hostel too. Everything was neatly in its place, well organised and everything that they had in the hostel functioned perfectly. The wooden floor was beautifully looked after and the purple on the walls was really inviting. I also liked the fact that there were lots of brochures and trip ideas for Santiago and surrounding areas in the lobby.

The staff treated me with care and consideration and the hostel was nice and clean. I also really liked the huge, floor-to-ceiling windows in the dormitory — I love classic features when it comes to architecture — but apart from that there wasn’t really anything special about this hotel or anything to make it stand out from the rest. It was very small. There wasn’t a lounge area to relax it, just a large table to eat breakfast on. Breakfast, by the way, was pretty disappointing. Those staying in the dormitory were only served toast, cheese, jam and coffee, etc. Those staying in the private rooms had to go next door to the coffee shop to be served their breakfast. Not a pleasant experience when during the winter months you want to eat breakfast in your pyjamas. It was a pretty boring place.
