Despite the thick smog which often blankets Santiago, the city offers exciting discoveries and proximity to natural delights. The Mapocho River bisects the city, winding north of the central Plaza de Armas and near the Museo de Bellas Artes. Nightlife and restaurants dot hip neighborhood Bella Vista, where Nobel prize winning poet Pablo Neruda built the La Chascona house. Cafe culture and green urban parks are inviting ways to while away the hours, and if that gets tiring you can head to the Barrio Brasil district for some bohemian funk. Santiago makes a great base for day trips as well, with the Maipo Valley wine region, mountain climbing, and kayaking all within striking distance. Continuing to commune with nature, when you get back to ... Read more
the city try the "earthquake" (terremoto), a drink made of wine and ice cream which will surely shake you up.
Both tourists and smog are more prevalent during the summer months (December - February) in Santiago, although this is by no means a bad time to travel if it’s the only season you can manage. Spring (September - November) and fall (March - May) have pleasant temperatures in the 60s and 70s (16°-24°C) during the day and decidedly cleaner air and shorter lines for tourist attractions. Santiago is also a great jumping-off point for Chile’s snowy mountain resorts, so if you are looking to combine your trip to the capital with some skiing or snowboarding, plan to visit in winter (June - August), but be prepared for some cold rain in the city.

The best of Santiago is far from the chaotic city centre. The residential neighboroods of Providencia, Nunoa and of course Bella Vista is where you can slowly but inesorably let the hidden beauty of this city grown into uou.

Santiago is always surprising! been there 5 times and the city is improving their infrastructure, urban mobility, security, restaurants....
the service in general could be better but you can see that they are trying!

If you're into beautiful vistas, wander around Cerro Santa Lucía. Check out the street graffiti scene. Pick up some spice packets of merkén or merquén at Mercado Tirso de Molina. Just be really vigilant in Santiago. The back of my purse got sliced open in Santiago near an ATM. (Luckily the thieves didn't get anything.)

This is a very large and modern city in the middle of Chile. We were impressed by the number of tall buildings including the tallest in South America currently under construction. The city seemed to have a laid back vibe and livable atmosphere.

Santiago doesn't get the credit that it deserves. This modern city isn't a tourist Mecca but it is a remarkably nice place to enjoy life. Great weather, food, ample greenery and a vibrant nightlife. Modern, clean, and with infrastructure that exceeds that of most American cities. An excellent gateway to exploring the wonders of Chile. It doesn't have a lot of iconic tourist sights but this is a great place to spend a few days.

Santiago is a wonderful city because you can enjoy what the city has to offer, visit the beach, or ski down the mountains, any day of the week. The beach and the mountains can be reached in about 2 hours / 1 hour respectively. The city itself is full of great places to eat, drink, shop, and general chill out. I think it's important to note that there's a huge difference between the individual neighbourhoods too. If you visit Barrio Franklin, you'll come face to face with bartering mayhem in the working class part of time. A trip to Sanhattan will have you surrounded by lawyers and financial investors talking percentage increase and the like over a U.S. style burger or two. Santiago's tragic modern history - its 17-year miltary dictatorship - has also left its mark. The Chilean culture is one well worth knowing. First thing you should do when you arrive is buy a sopaipilla - a doughy bread made from wheat flour and pumpkin flesh!

Santiago is beautiful for a city of its size. It's filled with parks, wide sidewalks, cafés and museums. It makes a nice jumping off point for near bye vineyards, beaches, and glacier hikes. It's not bad as a tourist destination of its own. The subway system is easy to use and the city is relatively safe compared to other large cities in the region. While the roads are easy to navigate, the drivers are the most angry I've ever encountered (We've driven in many countries). Bella Vista and Provedencia are nice areas to stay.

2 day challenging trek, climbing to Cerro Provincia and crossing the ridge to San Ramon, the highest peak 3200m around Santiago. This is not an easy route, but totally worth it!
