had at the time of my visit. To my surprise, I wanted something light and the poke bowl was the perfect option. Presentation was top of the line, poke was fresh, the drizzle of the ponzu sauce and seaweed on top really added the bold flavors. The lower layer of rice was just regular rice which I thought was unique since I expected it to be a vinegary taste like most chirashi bowls are made of but it was nonetheless great! I recommend this place. I heard HH is the time to come so I'll return for that during my next visit.

Everybody raves about Chapter One and they do have a great happy hour with specials on Mules and their appetizers. It isn't packed at all on the weekdays for happy hour and not nearly as popular as it was on the weekends for brunch. They are packed at night and their layout doesn't lend to big crowds. Although they have a bar area, they are better suited as a restaurant especially since it's a smaller space. They have fatty, decadent food and not many options for vegetarians.

Great ambience with fair service located in downtown Santa Ana. Their burgers are pretty good with a good selection of beer.

The best time to come is happy hour. All beers on draft at 3 bucks off! I got the Guinness beer and then tried a beer I never had before Old Chubs. Wow I fell in love with Old Chubs!

I love Chapter One! Besides the location, Chapter One has an awesome happy hour menu until 7PM. Enjoy a Moscow mule on a warm day, a clean grilled veggie app, and don't forget the banana Benoit!

It remains a mystery of how these type of businesses stay open in such a economically diverse city.

Total hipster place that has a library decor and dim lighting.

I would recommend coming here for their Restaurant Week specials otherwise the Happy Hour specials are worth it. For normal dinner though, it can get a little pricey.

Mini Mac & Cheese: Mmmmm! Just small enough to be enough for the both of us. Love the crusted toppings + bacon + complex cheese taste.

Potato Pear: Lovely presentation of a pear. The sauce went very well with the potato but I can't help thinking that it's a giant korokke in pear form in which case, it's a little overpriced.

Etoufee Fries: This was really good! Shoestring fries in a spicy roux (wasn't spicy really)

Scotch Eggs: I know this was popular with the other reviewers but it didn't do much for me. The dish tasted overcooked to me with the hard-boiled egg being extra hard and the ground turkey outer cover being a little harder as well. Pass next time.

Chimichurri Steak: Holy crap why is the chimichurri sauce soo spicy? I couldn't handle this dish and traded with my friend.

Pork Chop: This was very tender, but I got tired of the "rich" taste rather quickly. Huge portion though!

Moscow Mule: Very strong drink in a copper mug. They take your ID so you don't "steal" the mug but remember to get your ID BACKKK because the waitress forgot mine.

Easy parking across the street in the structure.

We dined here on Friday evening and it was fantastic!

The two of us had reservations for 8:30PM and was sat at a booth near the kitchen area away from the bar.

We shared the sisig fries and the crispy fried chicken. Both were so good!
The sisig fries came with a generous amount of fries topped with pulled pork, pigs ear, pork belly, and a fried egg. It was really good but we couldn't finish it.
The crispy fried chicken was outstanding! The chicken was juicy and moist and the side of garlic risotto was so delicious. It was creamy, soft, and garlicky! I also loved the soy ponzu for the chicken.

Cocktails were tasty and priced reasonably.

Our server was on point with the service.

Parking: There are some meters but we ended up at the structure across the restaurant for $4 flat rate.

Great gem!

It's hard to tell if the place was open at night but once we entered we realized the place was busy. The lights were dim and it was hard to see the menus inside.

They should have a brighter sign outside for people to find the restaurant and brighter lighting inside. I do realize its part of the ambiance of the place but my eyes aren't as good as they were before.

Had the salmon/potato appetizer. Not very memorable and they just threw on top some spouts which I don't think really helped with the taste. It was bland.

I had the pork chop and my bf had the ahi tuna. Pork chop was really good and succulent. My bf enjoyed the Ahi. It was perfectly seared and tasted fresh.

Afterwards we had the chocolate bacon banana dessert. It was good but I couldn't taste the bacon. I did enjoy the chocolate bits with the banana sauce.

The waitress was friendly and attentive. Chapter One is hipstery but a overall nice place to chill.
They have a variety of drinks. Will come back for more.

I've been here many a times, usually for drinks and that's about it, but this review will be for my dinner experience. There's no actual parking lot, but there are nearby parking structures or you can park on the street. It's in Downtown Santa Ana, so deal with it. The restaurant has a nice hipster vibe to it and looks like a library on the inside but with loud music. A little too loud if you ask me. There was a live band playing, and it kind of disrupted a lot of the dinner experience since we had to pretty much yell to be heard.

Our server was super nice and accommodating. We had regular water refills, she always came back to check up on us, and was very attentive. We ordered the scallop as an app and shared the beef culotte (medium rare). The scallop was super tasty and had a pretty good flavor considering it was scallop. However, the beef culotte was very overcooked and came out to us medium well/well done. NOOOOOO!!!! No piece of animal except for chicken should be cooked like that! Considering this was a date, I didn't want to be THAT person to take it back. But the meat just sat there, and I was hungry. (Sorry Tom Leykis, your stupid advice to men isn't gonna work on this broad. I like food, and I don't mind eating more than the man. No shame, no shame). We ended up sending it back. The server was cool about it, and when we got the new one it was cooked the way we wanted it: medium rare. The meat was a bit tough to chew but good nonetheless. I'll probably try something different the next time around. Unfortunately, I had some dietary restrictions that night, so I couldn't eat the duck fat fries that everyone boasted about.

I think our server really made the night for us more than the food, but I could tell this place was good eats, so I'll definitely come back again. Probably on a night without live music though (minus a star for the noise level).

Been here a number of times. They have experimental cocktails like one with bacon and random beers like "game of thrones." Mac and cheese is really good.

I stay up at night dreaming of their French Onion Soup and flatbreads. Everything on the menu is a modern twist of some of your favorite bar food and it does not disappoint. They also make their own ginger beer for the Moscow Mules - does it get any better?

Wow, I'm surprised another great restaurant in Santa Ana. Honestly, I wasn't expecting much out of this place because of it's location; sorry!

My friend and I ordered:

1. potato pear - 3.5 star. Interesting concept, but just mash potatoes shaped like a pear.

2. Friend chicken - 4 stars. Best dish of the night, perfectly crunchy, perfectly fried, perfectly juicy, can't ask for more. Their gravy is some special gravy that I've never tasted before.

3. Beef Coole? - 4 stars. Love the spice, love the potatoes, love the gravy.

4. Red Velvet donuts - 3 stars. Disappointing. Basically dry red velvet cake cut into a donuts shape.

Tip: Be sure to make reservation on weekend; it can get packed. Be prepare to scream rather than talk to your friends because when the live band plays, you won't be able to hear each other!

Chapter One, you and I could have a deep, dark intimate affair and I'd be ok with it. I've been lured in by your mood lighting and I've become friends with a few bar stools over a flight of beers, whisky, and an unforgettable dessert. We could make this work. Just don't tell anyone.

I first found you when I was tempted to try the Moscow Mule. Unfortunately, the two times that I tried it, it just didn't live up to the hype - too much ginger, too much alcohol and not enough of the well balanced ingredients that would do the trick. :(

What I love are the flights. I love craft beer and it's the cheapest way to try a variety of selections. I was here recently and closed down the bar with a friend, a few flights and some dessert. We were both in love with the bourbon bacon banana donut. Every bite was heaven and I think I ate most of it. Beer and dessert just go good together.

We also tried the apple donut. I love apples but this was just a disappointment. I will be back for that banana donut though and of course, the flights. The bartenders here are awesome. I love the vibe and their knowledge of craft beers.

Great beers and drinks. Tasty appetizers. Awesome entrees. And amazing desserts. Wow. Who wouldn't want to go here. I had the Steak Culotte which was coffee chocolate rubbed wrapped in bacon. Awesome! Wife had the duck. Super sweet and tasty. Desserts were awesome. Banana bourbon bacon donut!! Yes please!!! On top of that, they serve Moscow mules in a real copper cup. Nice!

For my first birthday meal this year, courtesy of the BFF, I chose to redeem my dinner at Chapter One: the Modern Local last night. This place has been on my bookmark list for months. First off, we ordered two Moscow Mules. Seriously how yummy, gingery, and fun can drinks in a copper mug be? Well a lot. I loved the drink. I can't wait to try their other cocktails.

We ordered:

Shishito peppers (5 stars): These were cut up, sauteed, and tossed in a soy-ginger vinaigrette which really wowed me. I couldn't get enough of these slightly sweet, spicy, and tangy peppers. So delicious!

Lamb burger (4.5 stars): I ordered my burger medium and it was perfectly cooked with tzatziki sauce, red onions, & lettuce on a soft brioche bun. It was also accompanied by a healthy serving of duck fat fries. I love shoestring fries and I ate the entire thing. Well I did give the BFF a few bites because he shared his dish with me.

Seared duck breast (5 stars): Loved this dish. It came with a sweet potato waffle, strawberry ginger Kampot pepper reduction and decorated with fresh grapes, strawberries, and flower petals. It was almost too pretty to eat. I said almost because we were starving. I had a few bites and it was really good. The duck was cooked perfectly with crispy skin and oh so mouthwatering. I definitely recommend this dish.

PB&B (4 stars): OMG, candied bacon on a bruleed banana with peanut butter ice cream and maple bourbon caviar with chocolate oil? It sounds weird but somehow all the flavors together work. I didn't think that the bacon was candied enough because it was a little limp and not as crispy as I would have liked but the flavors were really good. I really dug the maple bourbon caviar with the peanut butter ice cream. *drool*

Service was outstanding. I was really glad that I was able to come and check this place out. I neglected to order the mac and cheese (I forgot) but will be back to try it next time I'm there. Chapter One is located on the corner of Broadway and 3rd St in Santa Ana's Artist Village. It's a really cool place with creative food and exceptional cocktails. 5 stars overall.

Came here for the Sunday brunch and it definitely did not disappoint. The Salmon Omelette was awesome and no homo, but $5 bottomless mimosas do not suck. The end.
