15 km east of San Pedro de Atacama, Valle de la Luna is an unmissable place to visit when in San Pedro de Atacama. Sitting on top of a giant sand dune it is possible to admire one of the most breathtaking sunsets one can think of, as the sun slips below the horizon and the colors around change from a deep orange to a more subtle pink. The views of the Cordillera in the distance are beautiful.

The Valley of the Moon is a total delight and a must see when you're in La Paz. Why? Because it's located only 10km from downtown La Paz and yet feels and looks quite literally like a completely different world. Centuries of erosion have left black pillars of rock that look otherworldly. It is breathtaking.

We rented bikes in San Pedro de Atacama. It's an easy ride of 25km with a few hills. Beautiful sunset!

Valle de la Luna, also known as Moon Valley is one of the highlights of the Atacama region. It's not hard to see why it was named as Moon Valley when you're here. The geological features resembles NASA's photos of the Moon. It's also one of the best places to see the sunset!

Considered one of the driest places on earth - no recorded rainfall ever. This is where they come to test Mars landers. There are cool geysers here you can see at sunrise.

Very beautiful, amazing scenery. The sunset is gloriously predictable but strangely lacking clouds, so not comparable to an English shepherds delight. Take a hot toddy!

We reached this appropriately named valley at the end of a very long day, and didn't explore it as much as I would have liked to. But we did climb up to the dune, where wind whipped enough sand over our bare skin that we won't need an exfoliation for a few fortnights. The reward was the beautiful experience of watching a dune forming, amidst strangely multihued cliffs and canyons. We raced back to the main road and drove to another spot that gave us (and about 100 other tourists) the awe-inspiring view of the sun setting over the Moon. Valley. My camera left about 100 pictures richer for it.

Billed to look like the surface of the moon, and the story is that lunar equipment is actually tested there, but I am not sure about that. Anyways, unique enough to go have a look, and some amazing surrounding sand dunes.

Rent a bike and ride 8mi from San Pedro to watch the sunset/moonrise. A hauntingly beautiful desert landscape. The ride home by moonlight is also unforgettable.
