Never been a huge fan of Phil's but this one isn't the best out of their franchise. Long wait time for under flavored food. More sauce and more seasoning could do wonders for the franchise.

S.O.S.
Aside from being my initials and a call for help, here at Phil's it stands for Sauce On Side!! That's how I prefer my Q's

I've had Phil's BBQ on my radar for the longest time. So when the opportunity arose that I was close by, I had to go!!

I got my Q's to go and I'm glad I did. The wait for a table to dine in was long.
I called in my order, went into the "to go" entrance (separate main entrance, no wait time), paid for my food, got a pager and waited for my food to be ready. In less than 10 minutes, I was out of there!! Sweet!!

Here's the rundown:
Beef Ribs - YUM! The BEST beef ribs I've ever had. They were tender, flavorful and it had a sneaky spiciness to them that was perfect. Get this one.

Baby Back Ribs - They were good not great IMHO. They were tender, fall of the bone goodness. The flavors didn't penetrate inside the meat, but the outer parts were caramelized wonderfully.

Sides: With the dinner entrée, you get 2 small sides or 1 large side. I got:
Sweet Baked Beans, Macaroni Salad and Cole Slew all were just okay. Nothing stood out though.

BBQ sauce was good, not too sweet and on the tangy side.

Even though I liked the BBQ sauce, I really enjoyed the ribs sans sauce. The meats were good on their own.

S.O.S. Is the way to go =)

Who comes to San Diego and doesn't get Phil's? This is one of the newer locations and I finally got to try this one. Wait was not long, surprisingly. The last time I had Phil's was a few years ago and the wait back then can last up to 1.5 hours. We waited maybe 10 mins to order, which wasn't bad at all. I got the half rack of ribs and that was already enough to fill me. it came with two sides of your choice.

Plenty of parking in the plaza. Worth checking out.

The Beefy Ribs are out of control. Deliciously Seasoned and cooked to perfection. I particularly like their BBQ sauce. My choice 3 Beefy Ribs with a side of coleslaw and baked beans and don't forget a side of their famous "deli-sliced" tri-tip.

Meaty melt off the bone Bbq beef ribs (which i can hardly find) with a side of corn on the cob and some sweet tea to wash it all down. Food is really good and the fact that it has beef ribs as opposed to only pork ribs is spectacular but it lacks options for the sides and the wait time in general was bad

Phil's BBQ offers delicious barbecue ribs, chicken, pulled pork and more. Their signature sauce enhances the flavor. Good sides, too.

The lines are not as long as when it first opened, but it is still a great place to eat. I'm not really a fan of waiting in line to order and pay first, but the BBQ here is pretty delicious. Also loved the onion rings and a whoopie pie for dessert!

This is the most popular BBQ in San Diego and probably the whole state of California as well. Super busy all the time in any day. Line can be from a hour or more easily. Takeout will save you time but will not be the same experience since the food will be colder and there's no outdoor seating for takeout. They too heavy in sauce in my opinion, in general food here is good but didn't wow me. Price is little in the high side, the baby back ribs wasn't worth the money and doesn't taste that great, the beef ribs is what you really wanted to get, huge and yummy !

How I heard about Phil's BBQ:
Me and my foodie friend drove 30-45 minutes to eat at Bruxie in Orange. We met a random couple from SD who suggested Phil's because we were raving about bbq meat.... we almost drove another hour just to check that place out but decided not to when food coma kicked in.

Fast forward few months, I was visiting my sorority sister near SD who was moving to Denver soon. She knew I really wanted to check Phil's out so she suggested the one in SM.

I'm glad my friend convinced me to go to the one in SM instead of SD because there was no line when we showed up around 11:30 Saturday morning.

A++++ for their customer service!
- They explained the menu to me and what they would recommend.
- The cashiers were patient when I couldn't decide my order.
- We didn't have to wait for our food for that long.
- They stopped by once in a while to check up on us.
- Super fast with our refills

My ribs were tender and tasty :) Unfortunately my expectations were too high. I've been waiting to check this place out for few months and seen people rave about it on Facebook . The meat was great but I wasn't satisfied :/

At least a 1 hour wait but you can call to get take out or try to get a seat at the bar where you can eat. I like the Pork tickler and get a beef bone on the side--inexpensive and delicious

Love this BBQ joint!! The sauce is delicious, ribs are tender, fries are like in-n-out but a bit bigger and tastier, onion rings are big and fried just right! Last but not least, the service is GREAT for a fast/casual restaurant.

FOOD -
BBQ Chicken - IMO, the white meat was a bit dry but the wing and leg(dark meat) was delicious. If you decide to order this, I would go with dark meat unless you like dried white meat(personally i would avoid the chicken)

Pulled Pork Sandwich - this sandwich was recommended by one of the cashiers up front. I usually like to eat pulled pork but this one was too saucy, too salty, and too sweet. If you mix some BBQ sauce into it, the pulled pork sauce doesn't taste as sweet (recommend doing this if you find the pulled pork sauce too strong).. The portion is great and good for splitting.

BBQ Ribs - my FAVORITE dish here. While the "full rack" seems smaller than it should be, the meat does fall off the bone and their BBQ sauce has a great sweet and tangy flavor. If you like the sauce, you can even buy some up front.

French Fries - Think of In-N-Out but even better. Cut a bit larger and not as oily, the fries here are fresh and taste really yummy.

Onion Rings - Decent portion which was nice. The onion rings tasted freshly cut and fried but the oil seemed a bit old to me. I still enjoyed it although it could have been a tad better.

SERVICE -
Josh was the waiter working our area. He was very attentive, friendly, and went out of his way to ensure we were having a great experience AND enjoying our meal.
