Description
One hundred and fifty years ago, this 1000-acre park was a windswept sand dune. To this day, its autumnal music festival, Outsidelands, is an homage to its former moniker. These days, you'll find the ... Read more
same serenity with a myriad of attractions -- art museums, a Japanese tea garden, a Shakespeare garden, even a buffalo paddock. Or, get active -- hike, ride horseback, learn archery or feed ducks at any one of three ponds. What Central Park is to New York, Golden Gate Park is to San Francisco. Stretching from the Panhandle to Ocean Beach, Golden Gate Park is over 1,000 acres of gardens, lakes, and cultural institutions. The deYoung art museum and family-friendly Academy of Sciences can be found near the Japanese Tea Garden, an elaborate maze of sculpted landscape leading up to a tea house. Rent a paddleboat at Stow Lake, or watch members of the San Francisco Model Yacht Club race their handmade boats around Spreckels Lake. While there are a number of homeless encampments throughout the grounds, it doesn't take away from the park's beauty. Just look at the Conservatory of Flowers, the blooming plantlife at the Botanicals Gardens, and the ocean views from the top floor of Beach Chalet.

This is a scenic tranquil place to go. It is so calm here and a great escape from the busy city streets. There are lots of native plants here and birds to view. Nearby are several museums and the iconic bridge. I especially love looking at the windmill and often wonder about the history of it.

This park has it all--amazing museums, a Japanese Tea Garden, several small lakes, paddle boats, running paths, a historic windmill and even a herd of bison! Golden Gate Park is a great place to spend a day adventuring.

I grew up near San Francisco, and every birthday demanded that we go to Golden Gate Park. Sundays are for skating, they close roads and let the roller bladers have the place. There are so many gardens and let me emphasize; this place is HUGE. You can get lost fast, its more like a small forest than a park. If you go West far enough you end up on a vast cold bracing NorCal beach. The best place in the whole City to visit IMHO.

This park is very large in size and every so often, local radio stations will host free concerts here.

For the kiddies, there is a children's playground with lots of slides, swings, sandboxes, and even a merry-go-around. Snack stands near by for the hungry kids.

The Japanese Tea Garden is one of my favorite components of the park. There's an $8 entrance fee, but it'll be money well spent, not to mention this is a great afternoon date place. Lots of photo opportunities available!

More recently, I discovered that you can paddle-boat here as well at an hourly rate. Life jackets and paddle-boat included in the rental fee. No lifeguard on duty. Paddle at your own risk.

The Golden Gate Orchestra was playing for free on a Sunday afternoon. They sounded great and there's really no bad seat.

Various museums for your enjoyment, but check the hours of operation. Look for coupons in the free tourist books around town or online.

The largest and best known park in San Francisco is the 1,017 acre (411 ha) Golden Gate Park. Its history goes back to 1870 when the site was an area of wild sand dunes. At the time, the area, known as 'outside lands', was well outside the city's developed limits.

A large park that could absorb a whole day of activities. Aside from the lush lawns and impressive features there are the world class attractions such as the California Academy of Sciences and the SF Botanic Gardens. Well worth a day of your holiday. Visit the nearby Haight Ashbury too to make it really special.

What is not to like about golden gate park. There is literally something for everyone. If you are here for a soccer tournament head over to the beach chalet for drinks or lunch downstairs.

Lovely place to stroll, picnic, boat on Stowe Lake, visit the museums, the Japanese Tea Garden. Sunny weekends get pretty crowded though and parking can be challenging!
