Description
In the 1800s, a ferry service connected the tip of San Francisco to Marin County. After decades of debate about the feasibility of a bridge here, the 1.7-mile Golden Gate Bridge opened on May 27, ... Read more
1937. The name of the bridge doesn't come from its color, but because the Golden Gate Strait is the entrance to the San Francisco Bay from the Pacific Ocean. The bridge is actually painted 'international orange.' Most visitors start at the San Francisco side visitors center, but the Marin County views of the city are worth a trip across, either by foot or bicycle. Just remember Mark Twain's saying: the coldest winter he ever spent was a summer in San Francisco. Dress in layers and be prepared to steel yourself against the wind and fog

I was surprised about how cool the bridge was. All of the photographers and movies do not do it justice

It's an iconic landmark. But walking (or biking) across is usually not very pleasant due to the cars rushing by and there is usually high gusty wind. Best to enjoy it by taking a view from Baker Beach!

The only attraction I enjoyed in San Francisco, but also the most famous one. I didn't care for SF as a whole and this made my experience a little less dim. Try going early afternoon or else the fog sets in.

Visiting the Golden Gate Bridge is one of the most popular destinations in the world for travelers. Many people come to the special viewing areas in the north or south parking lots, take a few photos and leave, but this doesn't give you the same feel for this beautiful structure as actually walking on the bridge.
We were ready for the wind and fog, but what really surprised us is how noisy the traffic is on the bridge! The steel framework under the modern lightweight roadbed amplifies the traffic noise and there are loud whining and clackety-clack sounds as cars and trucks pass over the bridge's expansion joints. These joints are necessary because they allow the roadway to expand and contract with the extreme high and low temperatures the bridge endures without buckling or cracking the deck.

The most iconic and cool bridge. Take a ride on it, walk along the cars and enjoy the view! Be ready for the wind tho!

The Golden Gate Bridge is truly iconic. It is one of the most scenic bridges in California. I love taking a drive along this bridge and seeing the views of the San Francisco Bay. Once, I had the opportunity to participate in a race where I had the chance to run across it. That is absolutely breathtaking.

Although we mis-timed our trip and couldn't go for a bike ride across the bridge, the views were stunning from the view points near Sacilito.

A true Ivon, who goes to San Francisco without at least trying to see the Golden Gate through the usual fog?

This was something that I absolutely had to do to scratch off of my bucket list. The best view of the Golden Gate Bridge for a photo pop is at Crissy Field. There is a parking lot that charges $1.20 for the first hour. We weren’t there an hour, we just wanted to take a picture. If you wait until high traffic times to cross the bridge, you will be at a standstill and risk heavy delays. You can also bike or walk across the bridge. There is a side for bikers and another for pedestrians.

It’s a suspension bridge that’s about 1.7 miles each way. You can drive thru it, bike on it, run on it, and walk on it. Great view of the bay. There is parking on each side of the Bridge.

Yes, it is beautiful and amazing. Yes, it's worth walking or biking to the other side. And yes, it is often foggy and windy, so bring layers to wear!
