Aquatic Park has a nice, protected beach where brave souls actually go swimming (in the Pacific Northwest Ocean) in the summer. It's also right next to Ghirardelli Square, so you can combine the trip with some shopping, ice cream and a chocolate fest to top it off!

A small little beach is Fishermans wharf, good for a dip or just for the scenery

The San Francisco Aquatic Park is a great spot right on the bay where you are welcome to swim, but you don't have to. There is a wonderful view of the Golden Gate Bridge and to the right you can see Alcatraz and a few old ships anchored nearby. The location is great, right off the end of Jefferson Street, down the hill from Ghirardelli Square. The perfect place to sit and relax after a hectic visit to Fisherman's Wharf. No fees, no problems, just get in and swim!

A perfect way to relieve holiday stress and walk off those extra pounds is an excursion to the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park

This is my pool! Come swim with
the seals before the water gets too cold! My favorite place in SF!

If you want to swim in the frigid waters of the Bay this is your spot. Came here to train for the Alcatraz swim. It's freezing, but beautiful, and a good place to swim in the ocean without much fear of sharks (although the water is murky enough, its hard to really know). If you are less crazy than that, this is a nice place to take a break from the madness of Fisherman's Wharf and stick your toes in the sand, take in some views of Alcatraz and the old ships on Hyde Pier.

Small beachy area right at the end of the Fisherman's Wharf. Nice view to the Alcatraz island.

San Francisco's Aquatic Park, located at the end of Fisherman's Wharf, is a beautiful lagoon area with sand and views of the Bay. Although it's usually relegated as a tourist spot, it's rarely ever crowded (the exception being Fleet Week). On the hottest of SF days, this is the best place to enjoy some sand and sun, as the temperature and wind conditions are perfect. For walkers, there's a long pier that stretches out into the water, offering great views of Alcatraz.

You will not find as many tourists here compared to Pier 39 and there are no restaurants to check out but if you want to get your zen in (or people watch) grab a patch of grass and listen to the small waves lap the tiny shore and hear the faint bark of the sea lions without having to smell them. You'll hear snippets of conversations in French, German and Italian from tourist as they bike or walk by. Watch the swimmers as they do laps in the cove or you can take a walk out to the pier and get a closer look at Alcatraz.

Just a great place to hang out and look out at the ocean bay. You can also just people watch as the many walkers walk by.

One of the best places to swim when you need to practice for a triathlon. The water is frigid and even with a wetsuit, it's an absolute eye-opening experience. No caffeine required.

Relax at the beach, shop, eat, or jog or stroll the Aquatic Park walkway out onto the pier. View of the Golden Gate Bridge, Belvedere, and Alcatraz. Large open park is perfect for picnics.

This is my neighborhood - just a block away. Walk down the hill to the water and watch the swimmers - most without wet suits - and kayakers from the Swim and Boat Club. Make sand castles on the beach, then have an Irish Coffee at the Buena Vista.

You can sail into Aquatic Park and even anchor overnight. Watch for swimmers of course! More information about anchoring here is available at http://www.nps.gov/safr/planyourvisit/aquaticparkcove.htm

That said, there is something magical about dropping a hook here in the afternoon and just taking in the sight of this incredible space and relaxing after a blustery day on the bay.

Aquatic park is a nice place to walk around and take in the scenery. Ghirardelli Square is close by where you do a little bit of shopping, grab a bite to eat, or stop for some dessert. Also, the Maritime Museum is close by if you want to learn more about the history of the waterfront.

I come to Aquatic Park when I'm in the Ghirardelli square area. In particular, I like to walk the end of the Hyde Street Pier and maybe take a walk on the Beach. And with yet another unique view of Golden Gate Bridge and the associated waterfront, I am truly blessed to live in the Bay Area.

You'll also find the San Francisco Maritime Museum in a Streamline Moderne (late Art Deco) building. The building was originally built (starting in 1936) by the WPA as a public bathhouse, and its interior is decorated with fantastic and colorful murals. The Steamship Room illustrates the technological evolution of maritime power from wind to steam, while the second floor displays include photomurals of the early San Francisco waterfront, lithographic stones, scrimshaw and whaling guns. The third floor gallery is used for visiting exhibitions.

This cool area is sometimes forgotten among the tourist hordes around the nearby Fisherman's wharf. And if you're doing the long walk along the water, it's a very worthwhile stop before you head up and through Fort Mason and onwards to Marina Green and Crissy Field.
