catching my breath, I was excited to be greeted by a friendly staff and also some more narrow hallways. The decor is old-school charming. The rooms don’t have bathroom, though some have sinks, so families and travelers who expect luxury should stay elsewhere. For those of us who have stayed in hostels and are used to bathroom shares, it’s a cute spot in a convenient location near Fisherman’s Wharf, but bit further from the noise than some other area hotels. Don't expect any extras such as TVs, a pool, or a fitness center, but it's a great place to rest your head at night.

I entered the San Remo Hotel through a narrow staircase leading to a charming, sunlight landing where the receptionist greeted me enthusiastically. The lobby is basically in the hallway but the high ceilings and abundance of sunlight make it feel less cramped than it is.
Since San Remo was originally a boarding house, the rooms are small and guests share common--yet plentiful--bathrooms. Despite numerous renovations, the hotel still retains its 1906 character. While the hotel's small size and shared bathrooms might be off-putting to Americans, European travelers will feel a little closer to home in this hotel.

If you're willing to splurge, make sure to ask about the availability of San Remo Hotel's rooftop penthouse. It's a great option for families or groups of friends, but it usually books a few months in advance

This hotel is definitely classic European style with its tiny rooms and full size or twin beds with stiff mattresses. It also has an old SF feel with pictures representing SF's past lining the walls. The bathrooms/showers are shared which is reflected in the price. The price is really low considering the great location just a few blocks from the waterfront. The hotel and the restaurant are historic, dating back over 100 years.

San Remo Hotel is a quaint and charming European style hotel that's in the heart of North Beach/Fisherman's Wharf. Rooms are cozy and the decor takes you back to a different era, which makes perfect sense because the building was built in 1906, after the San Francisco earthquake that took down/burnt down most of the city. You can feel and see the history when you walk down the hallways. Bathrooms are shared. Rooms don't have televisions or phones, but they do have free Wi-Fi available, so they're not all about taking you back in time. A payphone is available for use in the lobby. The famous Fior d'Italia, known to be America's oldest Italian restaurant, is also on the ground floor. Pier 39, Ghirardelli Square, and North Beach restaurants are all within walking distance. But if you want to get away from all of the tourist attractions, Hotel Remo is the quiet getaway that's still in the middle of it all.

San Remo Hotel is a beautiful hotel at a great location. North Beach is one of my favorite neighborhoods in San Francisco, full of culture, food and a fun European vibe. San Remo sits in a quiet part of North Beach away from the noise. It's also really close to Fisherman's Wharf, so getting to some clam chowder isn't hard.

The staff are really friendly and the rooms are nice. Two things to note: restrooms are separate from the rooms (though some rooms have their own sinks) and there is a stairway to enter the hotel (important for those who don't scale stairs too well).

The attached restaurant, Fior d'Italia, is the oldest Italian restaurant in America. I haven't tried it, though I'd like to. There is a fun scale outside the restaurant so you can weigh yourself before and after your meal. I'm not exactly sure why you'd want to do that though...
