First time I was here was for a Gogobot (now Trip by Skyscanner) event by the pool.

When I walked up to the Phoenix Hotel, I saw that it was funky on the outside-with murals on the walls, but I didn’t expect the inside to be reminiscent of an Ace Hotel. The hotel’s attached bar and restaurant, Chambers eat + drink, hosts Sunday Funday pool parties and other music events take place at the outdoor pool and cabana area too. The hotel’s doors are bright blue and orange-an oasis in the grit of the surrounding Tenderloin. The staff is young and upbeat, matching the hotel’s youthful and fun vibe. The art and sculptures around the hotel compliment the minimalist but clean and large rooms with flat screen TVs. The front desk told me the hotel is popular with SF residents looking for a staycation, and I could see why. It feels a million miles away from the center of the city.

First time coming here for a pool party and it has a great LA vibe to it. This venue/format is what I Always imagined a Vegas pool party to be. It's friendly and fun, not as douchey and there's a decent amount of space.

Great boutique hotel in San Francisco. It has a very LA like vibe to it with a great bar (Chambers) right inside. The only
Downside is the area it is in, the tenderloin, is not the best part of town - but if your looking for a trendy hotel with great nightlife, this is your spot.

This mid-century motel in the Tenderloin is a famous historical pit-stop for rock bands and movie stars. I love the architecture and lay-out, with rooms circling an oblong pool with a mural at the bottom. The Phoenix also features a cocktail bar on the first floor that often features guest DJs or themed parties during the summer.

You won't find a hotel like the Phoenix Hotel in this area, nor perhaps in most of San Francisco. The chic hotel includes a pool with outdoor lounges and an attached bar with great drinks, food and people. On the latter, Chambers Eat + Drink is one of the hottest places in the city. It's not pretentious and the interior is gorgeous.

Security at the hotel is pretty good, a must given its location in the Tenderloin.

Phoenix Hotel is a classic retro motel turned hip boutique hotel in the heart of Downtown SF. It's technically in the Tenderloin, so be aware of your surroundings, but the hotel itself is clean, safe and trendy. Free parking in their private lot is available for guests. You'll also find one of the only outdoor pools in SF here, and don't expect it to be quiet here. Chambers, the restaurant/lounge attached to the hotel, can get pretty packed in the evenings. It's also a perfect spot for events.

This motel has been turned into an art pad. It is pretty cool to see different art shown in each motel rooms. The pool in the middle adds to the cool atmosphere.

Wanna party like a rock star? How about sleep like one? If so then this is the hotel for you. Located in San Francisco’s (very) seedy Tenderloin, the Phoenix is where most of the touring bands that come through the city stay. Laid out like an old motel, the Phoenix is shaped like a two-story L that surrounds a lovely courtyard and a pool. Anyone who’s lived in SF long enough has some crazy story about this hotel, and I’ve partied here with The Thrills and members of Charlie Hunter’s band. It’s great for skinny-dipping, if you don’t mind lots of people watching you.

How do you write a family-friendly hotel review of the location where you had one of the wildest nights of your life? Um ... I can tell you about the ... no, not that. Well, I do remember that there's a pool you used to be able to go in very late at night, in whatever manner of dress you liked.

Okay, I can say this for sure: the Phoenix Hotel is now owned by the very respectable Joie de Vivre hotel group whose other properties I love (the Hotel Carlton, Hotel Durant in Berkeley, etc). And rock stars, actors, musicians and other creative types are still very welcome, although the antics have lessened over the decades.

The Phoenix Hotel is in the heart of the gritty Tenderloin, so if you need any late-night noodles or heroin, you're set. However, they have free parking, so it's a great downtown deal if you have a car (just don't walk around late at night by yourself). If you're catching a show at the Great American Music Hall or the Warfield, you're just a few blocks away.

I was here back in the day during the summer when they still hosted "2nd sunday!" I think they moved it, last I heard to mission rock...but that is neither here nor there. When I pulled up with my cousin the line was around the corner. The gated interior parking was limited but the Hotel looked kind of cheesy but I soon found out differently. A few female hostesses were going up and down the line looking for people to let in....they found my cousin and she told them that it was the two of us....and there we swooped right on in. Our other cousin was too late due to picking up friends....never did see her that night.

We went in...and it was like I was home...that is other than when I'm at home or at the EndUp. It was great...the lounge was loud - nice ambiance, great decorations and strong drinks, the pool area - loud, clean, spacious, and no chlorine smell...people were everywhere inside and out...in the pool...in the hallways....in the rooms....everywhere. There's nothing really special in the rooms, but it was just nice to open the door and straight into the party. It was great - just grooving with it. I remember this girl in a bikini in the pool with me. I remember meeting half the people there because they knew my cousin...sometimes family is a blessing. It was one of the best times of my life....and I lost my rubber ducky.

If you've been to 2nd sunday with a pool..you know what I'm talking about!!! Where 2nd Sunday will be now...who knows....seriously does anyone know?

Very cool "indy" type hotel with a storied San Francisco history. Nice place to stay if you're an exhibitionist and like pools.
